Beavers are widely recognised as a keystone species which play a pivotal role in riparian ecology. Their tree felling and dam building behaviours coupled with a suite of other activities create a wealth of living opportunities that are exploited by a range of other species. Numerous scientific studies demonstrate that beaver-generated living environments that are much richer in terms of both biodiversity and biomass than wetland environments from which they are absent. Emerging contemporary studies indicate clearly that the landscapes they create can afford sustainable, cost-effective remedies for water retention, flood alleviation, silt and chemical capture. Beaver activities, especially in highly modified environments, may be challenging to certain land use activities and landowners. Many trialled and tested methods to mitigate against these impacts, including a wide range of non-lethal management techniques, are regularly implemented across Europe and North America. Many of these techniques will be new to people, especially in areas where beavers are newly re-establishing. This handbook serves to discuss both the benefits and challenges in living with this species, and collates the wide range of techniques that can be implemented to mitigate any negative impacts. The authors of this handbook are all beaver experts and together they have a broad range of scientific knowledge and practical experience regarding the ecology, captive husbandry, veterinary science, pathology, reintroduction and management of beavers in both continental Europe and Britain.

This absorbing illustrated study reveals the evolving tactics and techniques used by all sides in the underground war during 1914–18. Covering the Western Front but also the Gallipoli and Italian theatres, this study explores three aspects of World War I below ground: military mining, attack tunnels and dugouts. In 1914–17, the underground war was a product of static trench warfare, essential to survive it and part of both sides’ attempts to overcome it. In 1917–18 it was rendered largely obsolete by the development of the all-arms battle as mobility was restored to the battlefield. In the stagnant, troglodyte existence of trench warfare, military mining was a hidden world of heroism and terror in which hours of suspenseful listening were spent monitoring the steady picking of unseen opponents, edging quietly towards the enemy, and judging when to fire a charge. Break-ins to enemy mine galleries resulted in hand-to-hand fighting in the darkness. The ingenuity, claustrophobia and tactical importance of the underground war are discussed and depicted in this fully illustrated study from an acknowledged expert. The artwork plates include depictions of the specialized uniforms, weapons and equipment used underground, as well as vignettes that vividly convey the many aspects of subterranean warfare during World War I.

Business success depends on the ability to build trust. Trusted brands succeed and sustain. Trusted leaders inspire followers, grow companies, revenues and futures. But sadly, deceit has infected business and become widespread. Far too many leaders now use their own "alternative facts", to mislead and misinform their customers, colleagues and communities. The skilfulness and ease with which some leaders now lie has become a Lie-Ability. And when customers stop trusting the products, services or the stories a leader tells, then the business suffers. If business leaders don’t lead a truth renaissance, we are all lost. People no longer trust politicians or the media. And many of the institutions and professions we used to turn to have also lost trust. The only people that can really save us now are business leaders. We need to become truth advocates and activists. We must re-establish a new norm where we tell the truth to ourselves, to our employees, to our shareholders, to our customers and to society at large. This book explores the 7 Deadly Lies that business tells itself, the 7 Dark Arts of Deception that are still used with monotonous regularity to manipulate the narrative. It offers C-suite leaders and senior managers a clear path out of deceit. It provides a solution to the Lie-Ability of some leaders by developing a deeper understanding of truth, how to reclaim it and how to build back trust.

Think you know who you are? Think again! Within 48 hours Tom Talbot goes from high-flyer to no-hoper, city banker to jobless fraudster, pinstripe commuter to terror suspect. His dog is killed and his home is ransacked, a ghostly Tibetan monk and an enigmatic Oxford professor give him tantalising glimpses of a forgotten destiny. As well as an identity crisis of Jungian proportions, visions of the past link him to a girl murdered on the Silk Road, the gifts of the Magi and the house of Medici. Concurrently, in New York, young hotshot lawyer Miranda Maddingley learns that her wealthy uncle has died suddenly, leaving his fortune to a cousin she’s never heard of, and leaving her with just an old ring. Smelling a rat, she tries to contact her cousin but learns he works deep inside the Vatican. Meanwhile, she unearths a mysterious family connection to Amerigo Vespucci, his voyages to America and a tragic Medici love triangle. Miranda meets Tom in Florence where she has fallen under the sinister Count Scala’s spell. In a race against time, following cryptic clues and supernatural phenomena around iconic buildings and works of art, with gangsters and fanatics in hot pursuit, they finally reach an astounding apocalyptic climax.

In the first decades after Christ a small movement from the Middle East rapidly grew to become an empire-wide phenomenon. Soon there were established Christian communities spreading from Jerusalem to Rome, all grappling with the same issue: how to live their new-found faith? A Social History of the Early Church seeks to answer this question by exploring what life was actually like for the first Christians. Through detailed analyses of archaeological evidence and contemporary accounts, Simon Jones addresses topics such as the role of pagan religion, people's sources of entertainment, the nature of family life, how societies were structured and the changing role of women. This book is a fascinating survey that brings this period vividly to life for scholars at all levels of study.

The Eurasian beaver was near extinction at the start of the twentieth century, hunted across Europe for its fur, meat and castoreum. But now the beaver is on the brink of a comeback, with wild beaver populations, licensed and unlicensed, emerging all over Britain. As a keystone species, the beaver plays a vital role in the creation of sustainable wetland habitats through its damming activities, providing living opportunities for a broad spectrum of wildlife. Yet as proposals for reintroducing beavers are underway, re-establishing the beaver in Britain is still a controversial issue. This book presents a case for our future coexistence with beavers by providing factual information on this species that has now passed from national memory, covering the biology, behaviour and ecology of the Eurasian beaver in a British context, from their early history in archaeology and folklore to their contemporary field signs in the wild. This book familiarises readers once again, after almost 400 years of its absence, with the Eurasian beaver, providing essential information on its requirements in our human dominated landscape. This book is for those with a specific interest in beavers and their reintroduction, and for anyone with a general curiosity in natural history, ecology or animal behaviour. It can be used as a field guide to identify beaver field signs and observe beavers in the wild by wildlife surveyors or general land users, or as an introductory guide for anyone with an interest in beavers and how to recognise them. The authors have been actively involved in the study of beaver ecology, behaviour and reintroduction for many years. They have a first-hand knowledge of beavers in captivity and in the wild in both Britain and a range of other European countries.

Beautiful series of reflections from an urban monk who has richly experienced the unconditional love of God and is learning to rest in Him. A series of writings to take you on a journey into the Father's love, revealing that maybe it's ok to rest. They come out of a life of prayer and are written in an atmosphere of prayer, drawing on wisdom ancient and modern, often surprising as much with their powerful simplicity as they do with their profound understanding.

The salmon louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis is adapted to survive in hostile marine environments of the northern hemisphere, including an ability to parasitize several species of salmon. Salmonids are some of the most economically important and sought after fish for human consumption, and louse parasitism has a significant impact both on cultured and wild fish populations. Salmon Lice is a timely collection of the latest research on the cause and spread of lice infestations and management techniques being designed and implemented to combat this issue. Salmon Lice provides a thorough single volume review of Lepeophtheirus salmonis, the key parasite standing in the way of sustainable and profitable production of salmonid fishes including salmon, trout and charr. Opening with a review of the biology, morphology, life cycle, and larval behavior of the parasite, Salmon Lice proceeds to review the distribution of planktonic larvae of salmon lice, addresses management techniques used in salmonid aquaculture and capture fisheries, provides a practical assessment of the salmon lice issue and explores potential solutions to the problem. With comprehensive coverage of the biology and distribution of this harmful and ubiquitous parasite, Salmon Lice will be of value to fish health researchers, aquaculture and fisheries professionals, and seafood industry personnel to inform the management of both cultured and wild salmonid populations. Key Features: In-depth coverage of a key parasite impacting viability and sustainability of salmonid fisheries and aquacultureIntegrates parasite biology and hydrodynamic models in diverse coastal ecosystemsProvides a practical assessment of the salmon louse issue Reviews international salmon louse monitoring and management techniques used in salmonid fisheries and aquaculture

Gregory Dix, an Anglican Benedictine monk, scholar, writer and broadcaster, was one of the most engaging public figures of his day. His classic work, The Shape of the Liturgy, has remained in print for 60 years and is an unsurpassed account of the origins of the Eucharist which continues to influence the Eucharistic rites of many Christian Churches today. Apart from this magnum opus, Gregory Dix left many pamphlets, papers, sermons, radio talks and other unpublished texts. From this remarkable archive, Simon Jones has created a text that will be valued in teaching, study, and as devotional reading for a new generation. It focuses on topics as central as the subject of his classic work on the Eucharist baptism, ministry, holy order, the Christian life, unity.
