Drawn from the authoritative third editions of David Grene and Richmond Lattimore’s collections of the complete Greek tragedies, expertly updated by Mark Griffith and Glenn W. Combining accuracy, poetic immediacy, and clarity of presentation, the masterpieces of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides have been rendered so compellingly in English that they remain the definitive translations. Each text has been carefully updated to bring it even closer to the ancient Greek original while retaining the vibrancy for which Chicago’s versions are famous. Alongside the plays, this edition includes an introduction to the life and work of each tragedian; an introduction to each play offering essential information about its first production, plot, and reception through the centuries; and notes addressing textual uncertainties. Featuring lively translations by eminent classicists and authors including Anne Carson, Robert Fitzgerald, David Grene, Richmond Lattimore, Oliver Taplin, Emily Townsend Vermeule, and Elizabeth Wyckoff, this is an indispensable anthology for any reader of the foundational works of Western drama, art, and life.

Sophocles' Women of Trachis is a play that resonates with the complexityof life, expressing happiness entwined with despair and beauty tangledwith violence. The date of the play is uncertain, but it was probablycomposed sometime between 450-425 BCE. The protagonists are Heracles(Hercules), the son of Zeus, and Deianeira, his beautiful wife. The story ismyth, but the theme is timeless. Heracles falls in love with a younger womanwhom he has taken captive, and Deianeira tries to reclaim his love usingmagic from a long-dead centaur's blood. Within the familiar theme of loveand heartbreak, Sophocles creates an image of the world with its fragility, mutability, passion, and tragedy. Sophocles (born 496 BCE in Colonus, near Athens) is one of the greatest

Sophocles stands as one of the greatest dramatists of all time, and one of the most influential on artists and thinkers over the centuries. His plays are deeply disturbing and unpredictable, unrelenting and open-ended, refusing to present firm answers to the questions of human existence, or to provide a redemptive justification of the ways of gods to men or women. These three tragedies portray the extremes of human suffering and emotion, turning the heroic myths into supreme works of poetry and dramatic action. Antigone's obsession with the dead, Creon's crushing inflexibility, Deianeira's jealous desperation, the injustice of the gods witnessed by Hyllus, Electra's obsessive vindictiveness, the threatening of insoluble dynastic contamination... Such are the pains and distortions and instabilities of Sophoclean tragedy. And yet they do not deteriorate into cacophony or disgust or incoherence or silence: they face the music, and through that the suffering is itself turned into the coherence of music and poetry. These original and distinctive verse translations convey the vitality of Sophocles' poetry and the vigour of the plays in performance, doing justice to both the sound of the poetry and the theatricality of the tragedies. Each play is accompanied by an introduction and substantial notes on topographical and mythical references and interpretation.
The war is over. The dead have been buried. The traitors have been punished. People feel more alive than they have in a long time. They are ready to start again. But Antigone is not. She will not move on, and she will not forget. She will drag everyone back if she has to. Lulu Raczka’s searing adaptation of Sophocles’ classic text hands the reins to the young women at its heart, creating something messy, irreverent and vital.
