More the story of the battle that rages within one soldier than the battle between Confederate and Union soldiers, The Red Badge of Courage established Stephen Crane's place in American literature and remains his most popular work. With no idea of the horrors of war, young Henry Fleming has romantic notions of the hero he will be. But when he enters his first battle his illusions are destroyed. Fighting for his life and scared, Henry must make a decision: run or stay.
Stephen Crane's best known story is set during the American Civil War, recounting the story of soldier who commits an act of cowardice then sets out to redeem himself by earning a wound - a "red badge of courage". The novel has been variously described as an allegory, an impressionist work, and a psychological portrayal of fear.
Take a long trip through the Wilderness or a short trip through a gate, and you might end up in Albredura. You could do worse, you could do better. Albredura is a city of survivors and cynics, hard magic, and cold steel. Trying to turn a profit is tough in a town where breaking even might not even mean survival. Mean Streets is a campaign supplement for Bloodshadows, the World of Fantasy Noir. It contains details on the isolated city of Albredura, gamemastering tips for running Bloodshadows, a mini adventure, and reference sheets containing many of the necessary charts and tables found in the Bloodshadows Worldbook and MasterBook rulebook. This classic reprint of the Mean Streets(TM) campaign guide requires the MasterBook(TM) core rules and Bloodshadows(TM) Worldbook--either the original boxed set or classic reprint.

This collection offers the complete poems of Stephen Crane (1871 - 1900), as well as essays on him by Joseph Conrad and Willa Cather. One of the best short story writers of all time, Crane was also an important poet who established laconic precision as the dominant style of free verse. His followers included such authors as Carl Sandburg, William Carlos Williams and e.e. cummings. Without any doubt, Crane should be regarded as the father of modern-days' literary minimalism.
HarperCollins is proud to present its new range of best-loved, essential classics. ‘He felt that in this crisis his laws of life were useless. Whatever he had learned of himself was here of no avail. He was an unknown quantity.’ Following one soldier’s journey from naive recruit to hardened survivor, The Red Badge of Courage is a vivid and powerfully psychological take on the American Civil War. Fighting for the Union army, Henry Fleming is thrown into a bloody war where the harsh realities and horrors of battle quickly become evident. Fearful, occasionally vain, but always viewing the war with honest eyes, Henry eventually comes to thrive as a soldier in combat, and it is with a a new conscience and outlook that he matures into manhood.
