What happens when a covenant people, chosen and blessed by God, turn their backs on Him? The Book of Ezra tells the powerful story of the Jewish exiles, a people who lost their land and temple due to disobedience, yet were graciously restored by God's sovereign hand. This devotional uncovers the deeper connections between Ezra's narrative and the gospel of Christ. It invites readers to see how the restoration of Jerusalem foreshadows the church's mission to rebuild and thrive amidst worldly opposition. This is the epic Cid, who in the last quarter of the eleventh century was banished by Alphonso VI of Castile, fought his way to the Mediterranean, stormed Valencia, married his two daughters to the Heirs of Carri n and defended his fair name in parliament and in battle. Here in this national epic, we see not only El Cid the militaristic hero, but also the loyal subject, the man of faith, the loving father, in truth, aspects of his character that many do not see or care to pay enough attention to. Behold, the Christian hero who was pivotal to the Reconquista, recovering Christian lands lost to invading Islamic forces.

What is the gospel? How well can we articulate the gospel? If our gospel is solely about forgiveness of sin and entry into heaven in the hereafter, we have missed the true substance of the gospel. The gospel is more than a private spiritual experience, the gospel is all-encompassing in its nature and scope. Contrary to what many Christians might think, the gospel has significant ramifications for the here and now.

The Spanish Brothers is an accurate historical record of the rise, progress and fall of the Protestant Church in Spain. In particular, it mentions the history of the two great Autos-de-f (Acts of faith: march and execution of the "heretics") in Seville. The only fictitious narrative enclosed is what corresponds to the personal history of the two brothers and their families. This masterful literary rendition portrays with excellence the biblical truth that God rewards His faithful servants up to a hundred times more, even in this life, for everything they do and suffer por amor a su Nombre - for the love of His Name.

Heroes of the Spanish Reformation is a series that surveys the lives of the brave men who risked their lives, and some who gave them up, to advance the truth of God's Word for the glory of God alone.

What you have before you, for the first time in English, is a reformational jewel by the Spanish reformer Cipriano de Valera (1531-1602). In his Treatise (1594), originally written for those protestant believers enslaved by the Barbary pirates, or corsairs, Valera masterfully comforts, exhorts, and edifies, while providing a deconstruction of Roman Catholicism, Judaism, and Islam. Perhaps most remarkable is his encouragement to those faithful held captive to witness to their captors, in both speech and life action, harbouring deep within a hope that the seed of the gospel planted by the captives would produce life-transforming fruit in their captors. Valera had the audacity to believe, as we all should, that the gospel can transform the hearts of those whom we might perceive as our most bitter enemies. That should provoke us to equal or greater faith in what the gospel can accomplish by the power of the Spirit of God.
