A Treatise to Confirm the Christian Faith of the Barbary Captives

A Treatise to Confirm the Christian Faith of the Barbary Captives

What you have before you, for the first time in English, is a reformational jewel by the Spanish reformer Cipriano de Valera (1531-1602). In his Treatise (1594), originally written for those protestant believers enslaved by the Barbary pirates, or corsairs, Valera masterfully comforts, exhorts, and edifies, while providing a deconstruction of Roman Catholicism, Judaism, and Islam. Perhaps most remarkable is his encouragement to those faithful held captive to witness to their captors, in both speech and life action, harbouring deep within a hope that the seed of the gospel planted by the captives would produce life-transforming fruit in their captors. Valera had the audacity to believe, as we all should, that the gospel can transform the hearts of those whom we might perceive as our most bitter enemies. That should provoke us to equal or greater faith in what the gospel can accomplish by the power of the Spirit of God.

In the year 1517, a German monk named Martin Luther (1483-1546) nailed to the church door in Wittenburg his 95 Theses. This was not some easy-to-read tract, nor was it written as a treatise for the common people, it was instead written as an academic dispute against what the Roman Catholic Church had been teaching at the time, principally concerning the sale of indulgences - or to put it more simply, paying your way (and that of your relatives) to heaven. In order to truly appreciate the magnitude of this dispute, one must first understand Luther's background story, because the story of his life has a great deal to do with his dispute with Roman Catholicism's soteriology. This is why we have decided to republish Carl E. Koppenhaver's Martin Luther, coupled with an English translation of the 95 Theses, which helps to summarize succinctly what God in His divine providence brought about for the good of His church. In truth, what Luther accomplished by nailing those 95 Theses was to start a movement that would forever change the world.

The Ten Commandments (1933) by Cornelius Van Til was an unpublished curriculum on Christian ethics taught at Westminster Theological Seminary before the arrival of John Murray. It is a must-read for any Christian seeking to understand God's law, its relevance today, and its necessity for Christian life and witness. In his inimitable style, Cornelius Van Til begins his treatment of the Ten Commandments by reminding us that ethics must be rooted in the being and authority of the God of Scripture. The only alternative, Van Til says, is to base supposed ethical obligations on something other than God, that is, on something finite. Van Til pushes us to question whether ethical obligations or values based on finite authorities, hopes, or motives truly govern ethical behavior in any universally meaningful way. In other words, on this basis, is there something-even actions that may initially seem beautiful or cruel-that is right or wrong? Is there truly good or evil? Van Til's conclusion is clear: ethics must first be about God and His righteousness, or it is about nothing at all.

What is the gospel? How well can we articulate the gospel? If our gospel is solely about forgiveness of sin and entry into heaven in the hereafter, we have missed the true substance of the gospel. The gospel is more than a private spiritual experience, the gospel is all-encompassing in its nature and scope. Contrary to what many Christians might think, the gospel has significant ramifications for the here and now.

History of the Spanish Reformation

History of the Spanish Reformation

It was only a few years ago that the Christian church celebrated the 500th anniversary of the protestant reformation, that historic day when the German monk and scholar, Martin Luther, nailed the 95 Theses to the chapel door of Wittenberg castle. What Luther likely thought was an otherwise insignificant event at the time turned out to be the much-needed spark to light an ecclesiastical movement towards reforming all life and thought to the teaching of God's Word alone. And while much is known about the history of the Reformation in general, much of what transpired in the Spanish-speaking world remains obscure and forgotten. Here then enters Thomas M'Crie, the knowledgeable guide who takes readers on a tour throughout the history of the Spanish reformation as it unfolded. M'Crie's History of the reformation in Spain, originally published in 1829, is an invaluable gem of scholarship that deserves wider exposure and distribution, and, in an effort to make it more accessible to modern readership, has been reformatted and retitled to the History of the Spanish Reformation. M'Crie's objective was twofold, (i) to contribute towards the history of that reformational movement that affected all of Europe and the New World, and by doing so, (ii) rescuing the Spanish reformation from obscurity.- From the Foreword

SAINT ATHANASIUS was an astute apologist, proficient theologian, and champion of orthodox Christology. He earned the title Athanasius Contra Mundum for his willingness to take on the world in defending biblical truth. One of his most influential works, On the Incarnation, was written as an apologetic for the doctrine of the eternal Son of God taking to himself, without ceasing to be God, full humanity for the purpose of the Father's glory and our salvation. This classic has since inspired generations towards defending biblical truth. The Celebration of Faith Series, conceived by Series Editor Steven R. Martins, reflects on the lives and contributions of those who have been touched by the grace of God, those who have professed, defended and advanced the Christian religious worldview throughout history. The objective of this series is to inspire and encourage grace-bought believers towards living out their faith in such a way that demonstrates the truth, beauty and liberty of the gospel and its comprehensive nature for the furtherance of God's kingdom.

SIR OLIVER MOWAT served as a Christian lawyer, politician, premier of Ontario, and was one of the Fathers of Canadian Confederation. He was known by all his contemporaries as being a godly man who sought to do what was right in the sight of God, and who believed passionately in the proclamation and defense of the gospel, and the administration of its graces. Near the end of his life, he published two works on Christianity & its Evidences and Christianity & its Influence as his contributions to the development of a holistic Christian apologetic. The Celebration of Faith Series, conceived by Series Editor Steven R. Christian apologetics cannot be severed off from the mission of the church, on the contrary, it must be understood in light of it. Far too often has modern apologetics been reduced to peripheral historical and evidential matters, in order for the church to fulfill its mission, the biblical apologetic mandate must be recovered, and this involves a holistic understanding of the gospel.

Is there, or was there ever, such a thing as a "Christian" Canada? Contrary to what historical revisionists might claim, Canada has a rich and deep Catholic and Protestant heritage. The motto on the Canadian coat of arms and inscribed on the Peace Tower in Ottawa bears witness to this fact: "A Mari Usque Ad Mare", Latin for "From Sea to Sea" derived from Psalm 72:8. In this short book, Steven R. Martins provides a brief survey of Christianity's introduction to early Canada, and how Canada and the Christian faith were inseparable in terms of its founding identity and aspiring spirit.

This is the epic Cid, who in the last quarter of the eleventh century was banished by Alphonso VI of Castile, fought his way to the Mediterranean, stormed Valencia, married his two daughters to the Heirs of Carri n and defended his fair name in parliament and in battle. Here in this national epic, we see not only El Cid the militaristic hero, but also the loyal subject, the man of faith, the loving father, in truth, aspects of his character that many do not see or care to pay enough attention to. Behold, the Christian hero who was pivotal to the Reconquista, recovering Christian lands lost to invading Islamic forces.
