Instead of the book he's meant to write, Rudolph, a Viennese musicologist, produces this dark and grotesquely funny account of small woes writ large, of profound horrors detailed and rehearsed to the point of distraction. We learn of Rudolph's sister, whose help he invites, then reviles as malevolent meddling; his 'really marvelous' house, which he hates; the suspicious illness he carefully nurses; his ten-year-long attempt to write the perfect opening sentence; and, finally, his escape to the island of Majorca, which turns out to be the site of someone else's very real horror story. A brilliant and haunting tale of procrastination, failure, and despair, Concrete is a perfect example of why Thomas Bernhard is remembered as "one of the masters of contemporary European fiction" (George Steiner).

Thomas Bernhard is widely considered to be one of the most important German playwrights in the post-war era. Highly acclaimed, he has written over twenty plays and novels and gained a reputation as one of Austria's most controversial authors. He wrote Heldenplatz in 1988 as a response to the fiftieth anniversary of the Anschluss (annexation) of Austria by Hitler's Germany. Highly controversial in Austria, the play concerns a Jewish professor who returns to Vienna after the Second World War and discovers that his fellow Austrians are as anti-semitic as ever. 'Heldenplatz' is the square in Vienna where the Austrian-born Hitler made his first speech after the Anschluss.

Alte Meister ist der letzte Roman, den Thomas Bernhard vollendet hat - Auslöschung erschien zwar ein Jahr später, 1986, entstand aber bereits zu Beginn der achtziger Jahre. Auch weil er dem "Lebensmenschen" des Autors, Hedwig Stavianicek, ein literarisches Denkmal setzt, ragt er aus der Reihe der Romane Bernhards hervor. Und ein drittes Merkmal macht ihn innerhalb des einzigartigen Prosawerks zu einem außergewöhnlichen Buch: An keiner Stelle im Oeuvre wird die Kunst, jede Kunst, derart verdammt wie in diesem Roman - sie ist, in all ihren Gattungen, samt und sonders fehlerhaft, nicht in der Lage, den Menschen auch nur das Geringste zu geben. Und in keinem erklingt das Lob des anderen, der anderen Menschen derart uneingeschränkt. Das Buch et mit jenem Satz, der inzwischen sprichwörtlich geworden ist: Die Vorstellung war entsetzlich."
Ein Medizinstudent wird während seiner Famulatur in Schwarzach von einem Assistenzarzt beauftragt, dessen Bruder, den einstigen Kunstmaler Strauch, zu beobachten. Dieser lebt zurückgezogen in einem verkommenen Gasthaus des abgeschiedenen, düsteren Gebirgsdorfs Weng im Salzburger Land. Von seiner Umwelt wird der Außenseiter für verrückt gehalten. Er selbst wiederum lebt mit dem Gefühl permanenter Bedrohung, fürchtet sich vor dem Weiblichen und menschlichen Ansammlungen. Seine resignative, depressive Weltsicht teilt er in ausufernden Monologen und Visionen dem Studenten mit, der zunehmend ergriffen wird von der selbstzerstörerischen Gedankenwelt Strauchs. Nach Schwarzach zurückgekehrt, erfährt der Student durch eine Zeitungsnotiz, dass Strauch verschwunden ist und eine Suchaktion wegen der Witterung abgebrochen werden musste. Der pessimistischen Bewusstseinshaltung des Malers entspricht die Landschaftsschilderung: Statt Bergluft herrscht der Geruch von Fäulnis und Verwesung, der Himmel wird zur Hölle; als Folge des Weltkriegs und der fortschreitenden Technisierung stellt selbst die ländliche Provinz keine Idylle mehr da und so hat sich auch die herkömmliche Heimatliteratur verkehrt.
