Elemente der Philosophie. Erste Abteilung
Hobbes: Leviathan

Hobbes: Leviathan

Thomas Hobbes

Cambridge University Press
1996
pokkari
Thomas Hobbes’ Leviathan is arguably the greatest piece of political philosophy written in the English language. Written in a time of great political turmoil (Hobbes’ life spanned the reign of Charles I, the Civil Wars, the Commonwealth and the Protectorate, and the Restoration), Leviathan is an argument for obedience to authority grounded in an analysis of human nature. Since its first publication in 1991 Richard Tuck’s edition of Leviathan has been recognised as the single most accurate and authoritative text, and for this revised edition Professor Tuck has provided a much amplified and expanded introduction, which will provide students unfamiliar with Hobbes with a cogent and accessible introduction to this most challenging of texts. Other vital aids to study include an extensive guide to further reading, a note on textual matters, a chronology of important events and brief biographies of important persons mentioned in Hobbes’ text.
Three Discourses

Three Discourses

Thomas Hobbes

University of Chicago Press

The three discourses presented here are now confirmed to have been written by the young Thomas Hobbes. Their contents may well lead to a resolution of the long-standing controversy surrounding Hobbes's early influences and the subsequent development of his thought. The volume begins with the recent history of the discourses, first published as part of the anonymous 17th-century work, "Horae Subsecivae". The editors present the complete texts of the discourse with full annotations and modernized spellings. These are followed by an essay analyzing the pieces' significance for Hobbes's intellectual development and modern political thought more generally. The discourses provide the strongest evidence to date for the profound influences of Bacon and Machiavelli on the young Hobbes, and contribute to the debated impact of the scientific method on his thought. The book also contains both introductory and in-depth explanations of statistical "wordprinting."
The Correspondence of Thomas Hobbes: Volume II: 1660-1679
Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679) is one of the most important figures in the history of European thought. This landmark publication sheds new light in abundance on the intellectual life of a major thinker.
The Correspondence of Thomas Hobbes: The Correspondence of Thomas Hobbes
Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679) is one of the most important figures in the history of European philosophy. Although best known for his political theory, he also wrote about theology, metaphysics, physics, optics, mathematics, psychology, and literary criticism. All of these interests are reflected in his correspondence. Some small groups of his letters have been printed in the past (often in inaccurate transcriptions), but this edition is the first complete collection of his correspondence, nearly half of which has never been printed before. All the letters have been transcribed from the original sources, and all materials in Latin, French, and Italian are printed together with translations in clear modern English. The letters are fully annotated, and there are long biographical entries on all of his correspondents, based on extensive original research. The whole pattern of Hobbes's intellectual life and personal friendships is set in a new light. This is one of the most significant and valuable scholarly publications of this century.

Behemoth, or The Long Parliament is essential to any reader interested in the historical context of the thought of Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679). In De Cive (1642) and Leviathan (1651), the great political philosopher had developed an analytical framework for discussing sedition, rebellion, and the breakdown of authority. Behemoth, completed around 1668 and not published until after Hobbe's death, represents the systematic application of this framework to the English Civil War. In his insightful and substantial Introduction, Stephen Holmes examines the major themes and implications of Behemoth in Hobbes's system of thought. Holmes notes that a fresh consideration of Behemoth dispels persistent misreadings of Hobbes, including the idea that man is motivated solely by a desire for self-preservation. Behemoth, which is cast as a series of dialogues between a teacher and his pupil, locates the principal cause of the Civil War less in economic interests than in the stubborn irrationality of key actors. It also shows more vividly than any of Hobbe's other works the importance of religion in his theories of human nature and behavior.
Elements of Law, Natural and Political
First Published in 1969. This collection of publications by Thomas Hobbes discusses the Civil Wars, written in the 1600s, deals in the controversial with a complete review of the Great Rebellion's events. Hobbes found attention from their first systematic political work, an early statement of his doctrines. These political, often philosophical works also track the deviation in his work as his devotion to religion increases.
