This volume collects the earliest written examples of the Minsi dialect of Delaware or Lenape. The volume consists of Rev. John Heckewelder's Minsi vocabulary, collected in the late 1700s and totaling 100 entries. A collection of 80 words of the language compiled by scholar/president Thomas Jefferson is also included. Several scattered linguistic fragments collected from Minsi tribes such as the Manhattans and Hackensacks by Benjamin Smith Barton, David de Vries, Jasper Danckaerts, Adrian van der Donck, and others round out the volume.

News of those events will not reach the United States until September.

Jefferson writes of his dread of “a doting old age.” He inserts an anonymous note in the Richmond Enquirer denying that he has endorsed a candidate for the next presidential election, and he publishes two letters in that newspaper under his own name to refute a Federalist claim that he once benefited by overcharging the United States Treasury. Jefferson does not reply to unsolicited letters seeking his opinion on constitutional matters, judicial review, and a call for universal white male suffrage in Virginia. Fearing that it would set a dangerous precedent, he declines appointment as patron of a new society “for the civilisation of the Indians.” Jefferson is also asked to comment on proposed improvements to stoves, lighthouses, telescopes, and navigable balloons. "Notes on the State of Virginia" is the only full-length book by Thomas Jefferson published during his lifetime. Jefferson first published the book anonymously in a private and limited-edition printing in Paris in 1785 while he was serving as a trade representative for the new American government. "Notes on the State of Virginia" was later made available to the general public in a 1787 printing in London by John Stockdale. Jefferson's detailed description of the economy of Virginia and his treatise on government is considered one of the most important American books published before the turn of the 19th century.
