Aimed at military model makers and wargamers who are interested in the armoured fighting vehicles of the United States as used throughout World War II, this book follows on from Modelling British World War II Armoured Vehicles by the same author. The book places its emphasis on US Army and US Marine Corps AFVs modelled mainly in 1/72 and 1/48 scales, in a deliberate departure from the more popular 1/35 scale, to encourage and inspire model makers who are new to or less familiar with these scales. Illustrated with over 270 colour photos this book features every major US AFV used in World War II, with many models shown in various stages of construction and paintings. It presents step-by-step guides demonstrating the painting techniques appropriate for different scales and includes an additional section showing how to paint wargames models. There is also a review of how the USA developed tanks and other armoured vehicles from the interwar period through to the end of World War II. This fascinating story will help model makers and wargamers give the vehicles they build an historical context.

In 1961 the first Armoured Fighting Vehicles appeared in the ever-expanding range of Airfix kits. The 1960s and 1970s are considered by many as the golden age of kit building and the enthusiastic schoolboys and young men building these kits became known as the Airfix Generation. The hobby went into decline in the 1990s as plastic kits gave way to video games, but the hobby has recently undergone a revival as the original members of the Airfix Generation, now at the end of careers and family commitments, take a nostalgic look back at their childhoods. Some, like the author, will become once again absorbed by the hobby, but many will be content to buy a few old kits – others are coming to the hobby from an entirely new perspective. In the introduction to my book, It Seems like Only Yesterday I write: "I have at last finished this, my tenth book, and I have to confess that wasn't always an easy task. I don't know why, but it often seemed that the more I wrote, the less I had down on paper. Fortunately, one day upon having finished chapter thirty-three, I was content and knew that I had completed my shortest book." Well, it's no longer my shortest book-this one is, and this one was easier to write because I was content when I'd finished only twenty-three chapters instead of thirty-three but not entirely so as I later added five more. I'll now say what I always say when I write the introduction to one of the bilingual books in this series: that I wrote it for fun, to save my experiences for posterity, and most importantly to improve my Spanish. It goes without saying that I would also hope that readers (if there are any) will enjoy this, my eleventh book. I gave It Seems like Only Yesterday to two friends and I was glad to learn that both of them had finished the book by the end of the week and that they said they liked the stories. I hope that they (and you) will like the stories in this book as well. Hace poco para gran sorpresa m a yo encontr el papel de seda y envuelto adentro estaba el nico alfiler que hab a sobrevivido por cincuenta y cinco a os." Ojal que pudiera haber incluido en el libro una foto del papel de seda y del alfiler " yo me dije. Empec a hacer planes de hacer una nueva edici n del libro para que pudiera a adir m s fotos. Decid tambi n asegurar que el nuevo libro tendr a m s fotos y me dije: "Por supuesto tengo que tener cuidado de no pasarme. No quiero hacer un lbum de recortes." Por el subt tulo de este libro Ud. sabe que he cambiado de idea. Ya no creo que haya nada de malo en lbumes de recortes.
