Human trafficking has become a global business, reaping huge profits for traffickers and organized crime syndicates, generating massive human rights violations, and causing serious problems for governments. This review of research and data on trafficking shows that despite the growing literature on trafficking around the world, relatively few studies are based on extensive or empirical research, and information on the actual numbers of people trafficked remains very sketchy. The book suggests a number of ways in which to enhance research and data on human trafficking.

The World Economic and Social Survey 2005 focuses on the Monterrey Consensus as the current framework for international cooperation for development. The report examines the correspondingly broad agenda for action that was set out in the Consensus, recognizing numerous accomplishments to date and draws attention to the further actions—in the financing and trade areas—that need to be undertaken in the years ahead to achieve both the Millennium Development Goals, as well as the broader United Nations Development Agenda.

The stigma attached to drug abuse is often reinforced by racial and ethnic stereotypes while at the same time these very stereotypes push young people towards substance abuse. It is this complex cycle of reinforcing negative stereotypes, marginalization, and drug abuse that prompted this publication which is meant for use by youth groups and workers dealing with this issue.

The World Economic and Social Survey 2004 examines recent developments in and prospects for the world economy and addresses their implications for the developing countries in the struggle against poverty. In 2004, the world economy continued the recovery that had started in 2003 and the indications are that this progress will be sustained into 2005. Nevertheless, there are a number of immediate dangers, most notably higher oil prices and the large trade imbalances of some of the world’s major economies. Economic progress in India and China is likely to enable the world as a whole to achieve the Millennium Development Goal of reducing poverty by half by 2015. At the same time, many of the poorest countries are expected to fall well short. The Survey analyses these and other issues in depth and also includes statistical tables, which give standardized data on international trade and finance, incorporating current data and forecasts. It is essential for decision makers in government and business.

The methodological material presented in this publication complements the recommendations of the System of National Accounts 1993, and reflects the changes and improvements that have been introduced to the System of National Accounts since its most recent version in 1993. Along with the previously published 1993 SNA, Updates and Amendments is intended for use by statisticians at the national and international levels and is expected to support the implementation process of the System of National Accounts.

This fifth edition is a reference work containing lists of signatories and parties of all disarmament treaties of the last half century. It contains data concerning depositaries and entry into force, together with the texts of very recent treaties (since 1995) including the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, the African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty (Pelindaba Treaty) and the Southeast Asia Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty (Bangkok Treaty). It also contains the text of two new protocols of the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons: the amended Protocol II, on anti-personnel land-mines and Protocol IV, on blinding laser weapons.
