The United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) assesses the levels and effects of exposure-ionizing radiation. UNSCEAR's scientific findings underpin radiation risk evaluation and international protection standards. This is the second of two volumes of scientific annexes that provide the supporting scientific assessment for UNSCEAR's 2008 Report to the General Assembly. It contains three scientific annexes. ""Radiation exposures in accidents"" aims to provide a sound basis for conclusions regarding the number of significant radiation accidents that have occurred, the corresponding levels of radiation exposures and numbers of deaths and injuries, and the general trends for various practices. ""Health effects due to radiation from Chernobyl accident"" provides updated estimates of exposures of workers and the general population, and an authoritative review of the early and late health effects observed that are attributable to radiation exposure.

The National Accounts Statistics: Analysis of Main Aggregates, 2009 is the 40th issue of this publication presenting a series of analytical national accounts tables for more than 200 countries and areas in the world. It has been prepared by the United Nations Statistics Division in cooperation with the national statistical offices. The publication presents, in the form of analytical tables, a summary of the principal national accounts aggregates as provided by countries and supplemented with estimates prepared by the Statistics Division. The tables of the publication include analysis of data on GDP by different structural components, for example, by type of expenditure, kind of economic activity, major area, region and country.

The Environmental Performance Review Programme is considered an important instrument for countries with economies in transition. The second round puts particular emphasis on implementation, integration, financing and the socio-economic interface with the environment. This report takes stock of the progress made by Bosnia and Herzegovina in the management of its environment since the country was first reviewed in 2004. It assesses the implementation of the recommendations in the first review (Annex I). It also covers nine issues of importance to Bosnia and Herzegovina concerning policymaking, planning and implementation, the financing of environmental policies and projects, and the integration of environmental concerns into economic sectors, in particular water management, waste management and forestry.

Le Système général harmonisé de classification et d’étiquetage des produits chimiques (SGH) décrit les critères pour laclassification des produits chimiqueset leur étiquetage par types de danger et fournit une base pour l’harmonisation mondiale des prescriptions et réglementations y relatives dans plusieurs secteurs (transport, agriculture, sécurité du travail, protection des consommateurs et de l’environnement). Le SGH vise à améliorer la protection de la santé et de l’environnement pendant la manipulation, letransport etl’utilisation de ces produits en garantissant que l’information sur leurs dangers physiques et leur toxicité est disponible. La quatrième édition réviséecontient de nouvelles catégories de danger pour les gaz chimiquement instables et les aérosols ininflammables, etplusieurs amendements destinés à clarifier certains critères et à rationaliser d’avantage les conseils de prudence.

Although Latin America and Caribbean economies are set to grow, sub-regional performance has been varied. In 2010, most economies continued to move forward on the path to recovery. This growth had positive effects on employment and private consumption. However, diverse factors came together in 2010 to create a less optimistic situation for the international economy, which, combined with diminished public spending efforts, suggest a decreased dynamism in the region. In effect, the external environment continues to affect the region’s economies. At the same time, the relative strength of emerging economies has led to an increase in the inflow of capital to the region. This situation brought currency appreciation. The challenge is to boost investments through increased national savings in order to better defend the exchange rate parities and contribute to the creation of a standard to support development in the region.

En esta edición del panorama social queremos tomar eslabones de la cadena de desigualdades que planteamos en La hora de la igualdad: brechas por cerrar, caminos por abrir, y que se concentran en la parte del ciclo de vida de formación y desarrollo de capacidades. De allí que parte importante de esta publicación tenga por objeto de análisis la población infantil y juvenil y la forma en que en ese período se generan y consolidan diferenciaciones que refuerzan la reproducción intergeneracional de la pobreza y la desigualdad. Se destaca la importancia del ciclo de vida y cómo se reproduce la desigualdad en opciones para alcanzar, en las trayectorias vitales, una movilidad social sostenible. Con tal criterio se aborda, bajo distintas perspectivas, la situación de la población de 0 a 29 años, su dinámica interna, su perspectiva de futuro y su eslabonamiento con otros grupos etarios.

The publication presents the Financial Report and Audited Financial Statements and Report of the Board of Auditors on the United Nations Peacekeeping Operations.

The report presents the yearly assessment of global progress towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), determining the areas where progress has been made, and those that are lagging behind. It also pinpoints the areas where accelerated efforts are needed to meet the MDGs by 2015. The report is based on a master set of data compiled by the Inter to Agency and Expert Group on MDG Indicators led by the Statistics Division of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs.

This publication serves as a guide to the proceedings of the Security Council. The current Supplement covers the years 1993 to 1995. It deals with a period when the Council's practice, in response to changes and new challenges on the international scene, considerably expanded in scope in the areas of conflict prevention, peacekeeping and electoral assistance. This period also witnessed new dimensions in the Council’s interpretation of the Charter of the UN. The Repertoire is designed to assist government officials, practitioners on international law, academics and all those interested in the work of the UN to gain a better understanding of the framework within which it operates.

Tras una caída del 2,8% del PIB per cápita en 2009, para 2010 la CEPAL estima que América Latina y el Caribe crecerá un 6%, correspondiente a un aumento del 4,8% del producto por habitante, si bien el comportamiento por subregiones ha sido heterogéneo. Para aumentar su capacidad de crecimiento, las economías de la región deben invertir más. A pesar de los avances, los países de América Latina y el Caribe aún están lejos de los niveles de inversión de la década de los setenta. El desafío es que el aumento de la inversión sea apoyado por un mayor ahorro nacional para defender mejor las paridades cambiarias y contribuir a la conformación de un patrón de especialización acorde con los requerimientos que plantea el desarrollo de la región.

Many illicit drug markets have reached global dimensions and require control strategies on a comparable scale. In that context, there is a need to better understand these transnational markets and the manner in which they operate. The annual Report, produced by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, is a contribution towards that objective. It provides an overview of the illicit drug situation worldwide and regionally, analytical discussions of the key transnational drug markets and statistical trends for all major drug categories.

Healthy ecosystems provide invaluable functions and services that are essential to the marine environment and to human well-being. Unfortunately, some human activities have had an adverse impact on the structure and functioning of marine ecosystems. A multitude of stressors, such as pollution, overfishing, coastal development, invasive alien species, and climate change, have impaired the ability of these ecosystems to provide essential goods and services. This training manual focuses on the development and implementation of an ecosystem approach to the management of human activities and their impacts on the marine environment. An ecosystem approach is essentially an evolution of integrated coastal and ocean management, with a greater emphasis on ecosystem goals and objectives and their outcomes.

Guatemala is one of the countries in Latin America with the longest foreign direct investment (FDI) attraction record. This report reviews the different policies that bear an impact on FDI in Guatemala, with a view to recommending concrete policy actions to improve the country’s attractiveness and the benefits from FDI throughout the economy and in relation with the strategy sectors identified by the government.
