The 2008 edition of the Statistical Yearbook for Latin America and the Caribbean retains the content and design of the past three years. The aim is to respond to the demands of users who require statistical information in order to analyse the economic and social situation of the region. This year’s issue of the Yearbook comprises four chapters. The first covers demographic and social indicators, reflecting special efforts to mainstream the gender perspective in statistical information. The second chapter presents basic economic, trade and balance-of-payments statistics as well as national accounts. Taking account of the growing concern of the regional and international community for sustainable development, the third chapter provides the available information on the environment and natural resources.

The series provides practical advice and case studies of best policy practice for attracting and benefiting from foreign direct investment (FDI), in line with national development strategies. It draws on the experiences gained from the capacity and institution-building work of the United Nations conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in developing countries and countries with economies in transition. The Investment Advisory consists of Series A and Series B. This Series B examines how policy choices affect relative outcomes in achieving reliable power supply at competitive economic cost. It studies electricity infrastructure in Chile and New Zealand and explores “best practices” to create an institutional environment conducive to maximizing development benefits from increased foreign investment.

The United Nations Register of Conventional Arms was founded when inter-State warfare had, for a long time, been considered the main threat to peace and security. It focuses on transfers of those major conventional weapons that typically can be used in offensive military operations carried out across international borders. This publication offers historical information on the Register as a tool of transparency, as well as points to possibilites for its future development. It also presents facts and figures related to the Register in convenient statistical graphs.

This report presents the outcome of the United Nations Evaluation Group (UNEG) evaluability assessments of the Delivering as One (DaO) pilot initiatives. The evaluability assessments were designed to be the first stage of an overall evaluation process but can also be viewed as stand to alone products that may be useful to a future evaluation. The assessments describe and analyse the basic parameters that will make it possible to fully evaluate at a later stage both the results of the DaO pilot initiatives and the processes that will lead to these results.

This publication presents, in the form of analytical tables, a summary of the principal national accounting aggregates based on official detailed national accounts data for more than 200 countries and areas of the world for the years 1970 to 2007. The analysis covers the level of total and per capita gross domestic product, shares of gross domestic product by expenditure and by kind of activity, economic structures, economic development and price development, average growth of gross domestic product and components thereof, and implicit price deflators. The national data for each country and area are presented in separate chapters using uniform table headings and classifications recommended in the United Nations System of National Accounts 1993.
