Natural resources management and access to and control over resources are identified as a critical concern faced by indigenous peoples throughout Asia. To address this, UNDP Regional Indigenous People’s programme conducted analytical studies on natural resources systems and their interface with national laws and policies in Bangladesh, Cambodia, Malaysia and Thailand. Consultations carried out with indigenous communities, governments, NGOs and academics have enriched and informed the studies and enabled the inclusion of a wide range of perspectives. The regional synthesis paper draws on the country assessments to identify gaps in policy and practice, and compiles key recommendations for further work on this issue.

The new phase of challenging Globalisation is characterized by economic multipolarity with significant weight of the South. Due to dynamism and openness, today the largest and the rapidly-growing developing countries play a fundamental role in stabilizing the world economy. This second edition of the UNCTAD publication focuses on increasing of analytical emphasis and explains new and emerging economic trends. Compiled by the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs, this bibliography covers 21 subject categories based on the major topics of the United Nations Convention of the Law of the Sea. It is intended for the use of those interested in ocean affairs and the law of the sea matters in general and in the UN Convention on the Law in the Sea in particular.

This handy pocketbook provides an easy-to-use international compilation of basic economic, social and environmental indicators for 215 countries and areas worldwide. It covers 55 key indicators in the areas of population, economic activity, agriculture, industry, energy, international trade, transport, communications, gender, education and environment, drawn from over 20 international statistical sources. The layout provides an easy-to-view comprehensive statistical profile of each country or area and the notes on sources and definition provide a valuable guide for further research by the in-depth user of these statistics.

The publication is a part of the Tunza Environmental Series for Children sponsored by the United Nations Environmental programme (UNEP). “Tunza” means “to treat with care or affection” in Swahili. UNEP hopes to inspire caring for the earth through creative literature that sparks the interest and awareness of children, their parents and teachers.

This publication provides statistics and assessments of annual medical and scientific requirements for psychotropic substances, levels of consumption of groups of the substances, prohibitions and restrictions on their export and import. This trilingual publication is in English, French and Spanish.

The 2006 revision builds on the 2004 revision and incorporates both the results of the 2000 round of national population censuses and of recent specialised surveys carried out in countries around the world. These sources provide both demographic and other information to assess the progress made in achieving the internationally agreed development goals, including the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The comprehensive review of past worldwide demographic trends and future prospects presented in the 2006 revision provides the population basis for the assessment of those goals. This volume presents all major demographic indicators, for all countries and their aggregates, in form of demographic profiles and indicator to specific data tables.

The report contains an analysis of the drug control situation worldwide so that governments are kept aware of existing and potential situations that may endanger the objectives of the international drug control treaties. The 2007 report focuses on the issue of the principle of proportionality and drug to related offences. Divided into four parts, it also covers the following topics: operation of the international drug control system, an analysis of the world situation and, finally, a set of recommendations to governments, the United Nations and other relevant international and regional organisations.

The UN Seminar on “Implementing the UNSC Resolution 1540 (2004) in Latin America and the Caribbean” was aimed at raising awareness about the obligations and requirements of the Resolutions 1540 and 1673 (2006) and at increasing and facilitating cooperation and assistance in implementing them at the national and regional levels.

Today’s young people are the best educated generation of youth in history. However, the World Youth Report 2007 argues that for many young people, the transition to adulthood is slowed down by poverty and their inability to find decent work. The Report provides an in-depth look at key issues of concern to youth in the major regions of the world and points out that because of social and cultural constraints, many young people are excluded from accessing quality education, decent employment, health and other resources and services. The Report emphasises that policymakers must focus not only on developing young people’s capacities through greater investment in areas such as education, health and skills training, but they must also provide and protect opportunities for young people to participate in development as a matter of priority. The primary emphasis of the Journal is the publication of empirically based, policy-oriented articles, which can engage the attention of policy makers, academicians and researchers. The articles analyse development issues and problems relevant to the Asia-Pacific region. The Asia-Pacific Development Journal is issued twice a year.

Traditionally, most Asian countries have relied on maritime transport for their export and import trade. However, the continuing evolution of containerization along with the successful implementation of various land transport infrastructure development projects at the sub regional and regional levels, including the ESCAP initiated Asian Highway and Trans-Asian railway networks, have created new opportunities for extending the opportunities of globalisation to inland locations in both landlocked and transit countries.

In accordance with Article 102 of the Charter and the relevant General Assembly Resolutions, every treaty and international agreement registered or filed and recorded with the Secretariat since 1946 is published in the United Nations Treaty Series. At present, the collection includes about 30,000 treaties reproduced in their authentic languages, together with translations into English and French, as necessary. The Treaty Series, where treaties are published in the chronological order of registration, also provides details about their subsequent history (i.e., participation in a treaty, reservations, amendments, termination, etc.).
