In the ancient world, much as today, nations and rulers sought strength in force, influence and, sometimes, strange or material idols. Above these stood the Israelite prophets, messengers from God who brought hard words as well as good news. Using metaphors, imagery, and poetic language, a colorful portrait of God's love for His people, especially the poor and oppressed, is painted. Though they didn't always heed His Word, many found themselves amid the consequences of their actions (or lack thereof), including imminent destruction. In Prophetic Books I: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, and Baruch, Fr. William A. Anderson probes these visions, prophecies, and oracles, offering historical insight to the messages as well as spiritual insight into the action. He takes us from Judah to Assyria, through the Babylonian exile and back again, describing how God can work good out of evil and send grace through sin.
The books of the Bible covered in "Historical Books II" share a common emphasis centered on the need for the people to remain faithful to the covenant established between God and the Israelites. If the nation remains faithful to God's covenant, God will protect Israel and lead it to be victorious in battles, but if the nation abandons the covenant, God will abandon Israel and allow other nations to plunder and conquer this nation established by God.

In many ways, Paul was an activist with the message to live as peaceful followers of Christ. Unfortunately, Paul had to confront others who believed he was rejecting his Jewish roots, and his message of peace caused him a great deal of suffering. Paul preaches of unity, love for Christ, moral living, and the Second Coming. He warns of false teachers, promotes vigilance in the wait for Christ, and blesses these communities throughout his letter writing, from his earliest letters through those he penned shortly before his death. Paul's encouragement, his advice for faithful living, and his love for Christ speak to us today as clearly as they did for the early Christians.

Anderson lays groundwork for the reader to understand the historical and cultural contexts, "hear" the oral traditions, and "meet" the writers of each book of the Bible. The study is a condensed series of 12 books introducing each and every book of the Bible, providing insight into the Sacred Words of antiquity, and inviting us to discover the living Word and its impact on our daily lives. With narrative, study and questions, reflections, keynotes, and prayer, your understanding of the Scripture will be deepened with the introduction to the spiritual practice of Lectio divina.
Within this book contains the real heartfelt emotions of a writer collected over the years. All poems and songs within have been inspired by people in my life, and through events in my life that triggered these words. I write about the beauty I see around me, while others blink a shy eye.

Rev. Anderson writes that, "each of Paul's letters] addresses particular issues and arguments within the community to whom he was writing." Although he never preached in Rome, yet converted many in Galatia, he had much of the same message in both letters. The primary issue that is addressed by Paul in his letters is how to assimilate the Old and New covenants--the communities as a mixture of Jews and Gentiles were beginning to live their Christian faith together. As their traditions and newfound teachings would clash, arguments would arise. Paul's letters were written with love and concern for the communities to which he sent them. And as these conflicts would arise, his letters helped these communities to work through divisions and act lovingly towards one another.
In The Acts of the Apostles: Good News for All People, Father Anderson describes how the Book of Acts recounts the origins of the Church and its growth-from the persecution of the followers of Jesus through the spread of the faith. The ministry of Peter and other early missionaries begins the study, with a major portion of the book following the missionary journeys of Saint Paul. Throughout, Anderson explains the dominant role the Holy Spirit plays in the spread of Christianity. He addresses the rapid and dramatic changes in the years following the ascension of Jesus and the political and religious challenges his disciples endured. Through this study of Acts, we will see that the mission of the Twelve has become the mission of many, as we are called to gift the world with the message of Jesus through our lives today.
The Gospel of John presents Christ, right from the beginning, as the tangible reality of God's plan for the world. John's gospel, written between 90 and 100 AD, speaks about God, creation, and the meaning and message of Jesus Christ. This gospel focuses on Jesus as the Word Became Flesh, existing before creation. The prologue found in the gospel of John echoes the creation story in Genesis: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." Additionally, the role of the Holy Spirit is frequently spoken of in the Gospel of John. As you read familiar scripture passages, reflecting on them with Fr. Anderson's narrative and applying the spiritual practice of lectio divina, they will enkindle in you a deeper insight into the love of God for us.
After the resurrection and ascension of Jesus, the Christian message began to spread to areas outside of Jerusalem. The gospel of Luke addresses Jesus' message of salvation to all of humanity. Rev. Anderson asserts that though this gospel addresses all humanity, we will find in God's Word here that Luke has a special concern for all outcasts: "the poor, the sick, sinners, women, foreigners, and conquerors. He writes a gospel filled with compassion and mercy for the downtrodden." Jesus' message is also for the whole of our being: physical, emotional, and spiritual. With Rev. Anderson, you will gain knowledge of the Bible and you will use Scripture in your prayer, to bring Jesus' message to your heart.
