-y first memories are fragmentary and isolated and contemporaneous, as though one remembered vaguely some early day of the Seven Days. It seems as if time had not yet been created, for all are connected with emotion and place and without sequence. I remember sitting upon somebody's knee, looking out of a window at a wall covered with cracked and falling plaster, but what wall I do not remember, and being told that some relation once lived there. I am looking out of another window in London. It is at Fitzroy Road. Some boys are playing in the road and among them a boy in uniform, a telegraph boy perhaps. When I ask who the boy is, a servant tells me that he is going to blow the town up, and I go to sleep in terror. After that come memories of Sligo, where I live with my grandparents. I am sitting on the ground looking at a mastless toy boat, with the paint rubbed and scratched, and I say to myself in great melancholy, -it is further away than it used to be, - and while I am saying it I am looking at a long scratch in the stern, for it is especially the scratch which is further away. Then one day at dinner my great-uncle William Middleton says, -we should not make light of the troubles of children. They are worse than ours, because we can see the end of our trouble and they can never see any end, - and I feel grateful for I know that I am very unhappy and have often said to myself, -when you grow up, never talk as grown-up people do of the happiness of childhood.- I may have already had the night of misery when, having prayed for several days that I might die, I had begun to be afraid that I was dying and prayed that I might live. There was no reason for my unhappiness. Nobody was unkind, and my grandmother has still after so many years my gratitude and my reverence. The house was so big that there was always a room to hide in, and I had a red pony and a garden where I could wander, and there were two dogs to follow at my heels, one white with some black spots on his head and the other with long black hair all over him. I used to think about God and fancy that I was very wicked, and one day when I threw a stone and hit a duck in the yard by mischance and broke its wing, I was full of wonder when I was told that the duck would be cooked for dinner and that I should not be punished. Some of my misery was loneliness and some of it fear of old William Pollexfen my grandfather. He was never unkind, and I cannot remember that he ever spoke harshly to me, but it was the custom to fear and admire him. He had won the freedom of some Spanish city for saving life, but was so silent that his wife never knew it till he was near eighty, and then from the chance visit of some old sailor.-

This book contains two poems by the Irish Poet, William Butler Yeats and is illustrated with paintings by Jack Butler Yeats, an expressionist painter and brother to the poet. The Lake Isle of Innisfree contains simple imagery about the quiet ife the poet would like to lead. He thinks about this life even when he is on the busy streets of the city. The Song of Wandering Aengus is a metephorical poem about the search for love. An image of the poets love comes to him when he is a young man. Even as an old traveled man he still is searching, and hopes to find, his love.
First appearing in 1893 this was the second collection of poetry by WB Yeats. This beautiful collection translates the two thousand year old mythos of Ireland into words which have inspired and touched readers from around the world. The famous poem The Lake Isle of Innisfree is included along with the essay WB Yeats and Today's Political Elite by Tim Dalgleish. The 'rose'of the title stands for Yeats' homeland but also for Maud Gonne the great unrequited love of his life. Romantic and symbolic, once read, the poems root themselves in one's psyche. This is the Celtic Twilight brought to life.

This is a selection of works by three famous Irishmen Oscar Wilde, WB Yeats and Bram Stoker. It includes: The short story by Bram Stoker 'Dracula's Guest' which is thought to be the original opening chapter of his famous novel 'Dracula', three versions of 'The Ballad of Reading Gaol' by Wilde (and the original preface by his friend Robert Ross) and the early collection of poetry, 'The Rose' by W. B. Yeats (which includes his famous poem 'The Lake Isle of Innisfree'). There is a general introduction by the writer and actor Tim Dalgleish and other additional material. As the editor writes in the introduction: 'One should think of this little collection as if one, that is you yourself, had just walked into a pub in Dublin: You hand over a few coppers to the landlord and stand sipping your pint of the dark, black stuff. In the corner you spy three eccentric looking characters deep in concentrated conversation. As you make your way over you realise they are telling stories. One is an odd looking fellow, with untidy white hair and pince-nez, he is sonorously declaiming, in a sing-song voice, a tale of mythic, even epic, proportions... this will be a night to remember.'

William Butler Yeats ( 13 June 1865 - 28 January 1939) was an Irish poet and one of the foremost figures of 20th century literature. A pillar of both the Irish and British literary establishments, he helped to found the Abbey Theatre, and in his later years served as an Irish Senator for two terms. Yeats was a driving force behind the Irish Literary Revival along with Lady Gregory, Edward Martyn and others. He was born in Sandymount, Ireland and educated there and in London. He spent childhood holidays in County Sligo and studied poetry from an early age when he became fascinated by Irish legends and the occult. These topics feature in the first phase of his work, which lasted roughly until the turn of the 20th century. His earliest volume of verse was published in 1889, and its slow-paced and lyrical poems display Yeats's debts to Edmund Spenser, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and the poets of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. From 1900, his poetry grew more physical and realistic. He largely renounced the transcendental beliefs of his youth, though he remained preoccupied with physical and spiritual masks, as well as with cyclical theories of life. In 1923, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. Early years Of Anglo-Irish descent, William Butler Yeats was born at Sandymount in County Dublin, Ireland. His father, John Butler Yeats (1839-1922), was a descendant of Jervis Yeats, a Williamite soldier, linen merchant, and well-known painter who died in 1712. Benjamin Yeats, Jervis's grandson and William's great-great-grandfather, had in 1773 married Mary Butler of a landed family in County Kildare. Following their marriage, they kept the name Butler in the family name. Mary was a descendant of the Butler of Ormond family from the Neigham (pronounced Nyam) Gowran branch of the family. They were descendants of the first Earls of Ormond. By his marriage, William's father John Yeats was studying law but abandoned his studies to study art at Heatherley's Art School in London. His mother, Susan Mary Pollexfen, came from a wealthy merchant family in Sligo, who owned a milling and shipping business. Soon after William's birth the family relocated to the Pollexfen home at Merville, Sligo to stay with her extended family, and the young poet came to think of the area as his childhood and spiritual home. Its landscape became, over time, both literally and symbolically, his "country of the heart" So also did its location on the sea; John Yeats stated that "by marriage with a Pollexfen, we have given a tongue to the sea cliffs". The Butler Yeats family were highly artistic; his brother Jack became an esteemed painter, while his sisters Elizabeth and Susan Mary-known to family and friends as Lollie and Lily-became involved in the Arts and Crafts movement. Yeats was raised a member of the Protestant Ascendancy, which was at the time undergoing a crisis of identity. While his family was broadly supportive of the changes Ireland was experiencing, the nationalist revival of the late 19th century directly disadvantaged his heritage, and informed his outlook for the remainder of his life. In 1997, his biographer R. F. Foster observed that Napoleon's dictum that to understand the man you have to know what was happening in the world when he was twenty "is manifestly true of W. B. Y." 11] Yeats's childhood and young adulthood were shadowed by the power-shift away from the minority Protestant Ascendancy. The 1880s saw the rise of Charles Stewart Parnell and the home rule movement; the 1890s saw the momentum of nationalism, while the Catholics became prominent around the turn of the century. These developments had a profound effect on his poetry, and his subsequent explorations of Irish identity had a significant influence on the creation of his country's biography...........

A stunning facsimile of the 1919 first edition of William Butler Yeats's The Wild Swans at Coole: an elegant volume showcasing these poems as they would have first been read and a complement to facsimile editions The Winding Stair and The Tower. Published in 1919 during W. B. Yeats's "middle stage" and composed of poems written during World War I, The Wild Swans at Coole is contemplative and elegiac. This collection captures Yeats at a time when he was looking back on his life, coming to terms with the realities of modern war, reflecting on lost love, and defining his place in the world as a poet. It features forty poems, among them "The Fisherman," "In Memory of Major Robert Gregory," "The Wild Swans at Coole," and "On Being Asked for a War Poem." This facsimile of the original 1919 edition presents the reader with the work in its original form, with handsome old fashioned type, how readers and Yeats himself would have seen it in the early twentieth century. A great gift book and collector's item, The Wild Swans at Coole also includes an Introduction and notes by esteemed Yeats scholar George Bornstein.
