Tracing the history of agricultural scientists in the United States from the colonial period to the present, Agricultural Scientists: A Cultural History explores the premise that culture has dictated and constrained how agricultural scientists approach their work through the centuries. Beginning in the 1700s, Alan I Marcus examines the emergence of agricultural scientists in the United States and the effects of agricultural science on American society. Across nine chronological chapters, he explores agricultural scientists as a discrete group: their positions and responsibilities, identities and dreams, and the programs they introduced and furthered. He also considers the establishment and application of agricultural legislation, the creation of agricultural institutions, and the increasing centrality of agricultural scientists to farming and farm life, food and drug legislation, and the rise of consumerism and environmentalism. Uniquely focused on agricultural scientists and the cultural contexts that have shaped the discipline and the evolution of American agriculture, this synthetic history will prove valuable not only to agricultural historians but also researchers interested in the creation and evolution of university agriculture departments, USDA-funded research centers, and the growing influence of private corporations on global agribusiness.

The expansive blues of the water, lush greens of the vegetation, and bright shades of a rich and active cultural life make David Zurick's images in this collection a visual feast. His Polynesia photographs extol the marvels of a magnificent part of the globe and bring to light questions about the future of the islands. Tourism, resources, and politics all play key roles in oceanic society, as do the resiliency of traditional culture and the many generations of accumulated knowledge. The Polynesians face a daunting task: to look to the past for strength and wisdom but to the future for opportunities, and to do so without unduly sacrificing cultural heritages and natural settings. Zurick's imagery speaks for the globe at this important time, cautioning us to stay informed, witness the boundless beauty of our planet, and respect change that is inevitable while guarding against that which is destructive and exploitative.

I was happy to come upon Miracles after my husband Alan's death in 2015. While it was written in the 1960s and dedicated to the memory of David Hahn, it was one of my favorite, imaginative, cinematic novels that Alan wrote and which was highly praised by cinematic critic Pauline Kael and author Paul Bellow. It is as fresh in conception and execution as it was the day Alan wrote it. I am happy to get it into print. With love

The integrated solutions for Bodie, Kane, and Marcus' Investments set the standard for graduate/MBA investments textbooks. The unifying theme is that security markets are nearly efficient, meaning that most securities are priced appropriately given their risk and return attributes. The content places greater emphasis on asset allocation and offers a much broader and deeper treatment of futures, options, and other derivative security markets than most investment texts. Teaching Difficult History through Film explores the potential of film to engage young people in controversial or contested histories and how they are represented, ranging from gender and sexuality, to colonialism and slavery. Adding to the education literature of how to teach and learn difficult histories, contributors apply their theoretical and pedagogical expertise and experiences to a variety of historical topics to show the ways that film can create opportunities for challenging conversations in the classroom and attempts to recognize the perspectives of historically marginalized groups. Chapters focus on translating research into practice by applying theoretical frameworks such as critical race theory, auto-ethnography or cultural studies, as well as more practical pedagogical models with film. Each chapter also includes applicable pedagogical considerations, such as how to help students approach difficult topics, model questions or strategies for engaging students, and examples from the authors’ own experiences in teaching with film or in leading students to develop counter-narratives through filmmaking. These discussions of the real considerations facing classroom teachers and professors are sure to appeal to experienced secondary teachers, pre-service teacher education programs, graduate students, and academic audiences within education, history, and film studies. Part and chapter discussion guides, full references of the films included in the book, and resources for teachers are available on the book’s companion website www.teachingdifficulthistory.com.

Remarks of Father Craft - Missionary to the Indians. 1889 Great Plains: "Indians were not fools but men of keen intelligence... Reductions in rations increased fears. Census takers made grave mistakes, counted less than the real numbers; agents made false reports of prosperity that did not exist... It is not to be wondered that they finally came to believe in a Messiah whom they at first doubted, and listened to every deceiver who promised hope... "Interested whites took advantage of this state and howled for troops; the army protested their false statements but were required to go to the scene of supposed dangers... Persuaded by some whites that their entire destruction was aimed at, the Indians ran away in fear and despair..."

The saga of the screenplay you're about to read really begins the day that I broke my self-imposed rule about getting involved with "complicated" ( i.e. "serious" )subject matter in my hit-and-run career as a screenwriter for the movies. I had come to Hollywood in 1949 as an invited author of prize-winning fictions, ---and saw writing for film a good way to subsidize my profound commitment to the art of prose --- having learned that -in the majority of cases, -- the General Motors assembly line model of filmmaking --which Hollywood pioneered, ------------(and prospered from ) ---pretty much means that the pervasive confusion-- or collision between "Art" and Commerce---- which runs like a Wagnerian leitmotif through many aspects of mass film making, -- is apt to be trumped sooner or later by the pluses and minuses of The Bottom Line; thus, anyone foolish enough to take seriously the ongoing rhetorical (off-stage) palaver one tends to keep hearing about the unexploited "potential" of film as a medium to plumb the "enigmatic" depths of human experience etc..-is eventually going to hit a brick wall, as I witnessed, firsthand, more than once, ........ In my particular case, I certainly DID work (under a pseudonym) on some favorite projects of various producers now and then, in both film and television --But on the whole, I simply found it more congenial to my temperament to follow a freewheeling (figurative) surfboarding life as a free lance, where, if you weren't able to reach success (i.e. pay dirt ) on any particular try, you could always try again.
