Great Debates are just that - discussions designed to assess and evaluate the state of higher education systems, policies as well as social and economic impacts looking at inclusivity, accessibility, safety and leadership. These topics resonate with students, researchers and HE administrators alike. Titles included in this set: Teaching Excellence in Higher Education:Challenges, Changes and the Teaching Excellence Framework; British Universities in the Brexit Moment:Political, Economic and Cultural Implications; Higher Education Funding and Access in International Perspective; Sexual Violence on Campus:Power-Conscious Approaches to Awareness, Prevention, and Response; Evaluating Scholarship and Research Impact:History, Practices, and Policy Development; Access to Success and Social Mobility through Higher Education:A Curate's Egg?; The Marketisation of English Higher Education:A Policy Analysis of a Risk-Based System; Refugees in Higher Education:Debate, Discourse and Practice; Radicalisation and Counter-Radicalisation in Higher Education; Perspectives on Access to Higher Education:Practice and Research; Cultural Journeys in Higher Education:Student Voices and Narratives; Degendering Leadership in Higher Education;

Rates of sexual violence on college campuses in the U. S. have not changed for more than 60 years. People who cause harm target women of color, queer and trans students, and disabled students at even higher rates than their peers. In Sexual Violence on Campus, Chris Linder examines oppression as the root of violence, with a specific focus on the intersections of racism, sexism, and sexual violence. Using a power-conscious framework, Linder examines well-intended practices related to awareness, prevention, and response of sexual violence on college campuses, highlighting some of the challenges with over-relying on one-size-fits-all strategies for addressing sexual violence. The first edition of this book received widespread praise for providing clear and accessible examples of problems with current practices, along with recommendations for improving practice. Those examples have been enhanced in the second edition of this text. Reframing the discussion from focusing on “perpetrators” to “people who cause harm,” this updated edition includes a new chapter examining the relationship between harm and oppression, challenging practitioners and scholars to consider new ways of thinking about sexual harm and people who cause harm. By focusing on why people engage in harmful sexual behavior, we may improve our ability to prevent harm from happening in the first place.

This book brings abolitionist ideas into higher education contexts as a way to address the problem of sexual violence on college campuses. Despite college and university administrators spending millions of dollars each year to address sexual violence among students, rates of sexual violence have not budged. This cutting-edge book examines the histories of policies enacted to address sexual violence on campuses, drawing parallels between campus movements and mainstream feminist movements, describes contexts contributing to ongoing harm and violence among students with minoritized identities, and explores healing through community accountability processes. Thinking Like an Abolitionist to End Sexual Violence in Higher Education provides promising strategies for leaders in higher education to consider, including embracing mistakes, moving through fear, facilitating individual and collective healing, and employing transformative approaches to accountability. With suggestions for engaging in reflection and specific calls to action, practitioners, researchers, activists, educators, and policymakers alike will find this resource to be a transformative keystone text.

Historically and contemporarily, student activists have worked to address oppression on college and university campuses. This book explores the experiences of students engaged in identity-based activism today as it relates to racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, and other forms of oppression. Grounded by a national study on student activism and the authors’ combined 40 years of experience working in higher education, Identity-Based Student Activism uses a critical, power-conscious lens to unpack the history of identity-based activism, relationships between activists and administrators, and student activism as labor. This book provides an opportunity for administrators, educators, faculty, and student activists to reflect on their current ideas and behaviors around activism and consider new ways for improving their relationships with each other, and ultimately, their campus climates.

"Polar exploration is at once the cleanest and most isolated way of having a bad time which has been devised," wrote Apsley Cherry-Garrard of his time with the 1910 Scott expedition to the South Pole. And that's how most of us still imagine polar expeditions: stolid men with ice riming their beards drawing sledges and risking death for scientific knowledge. But polar science has changed drastically over the past century - as Chris Linder shows us, brilliantly, with "Science on Ice". An oceanographer and award-winning photographer, Linder chronicles four polar expeditions in this richly illustrated volume: to a teeming colony of Adelie penguins, through the icy waters of the Bering Sea in spring, beneath the pack ice of the eastern Arctic Ocean, and over the lake - studded surface of the Greenland Ice Sheet. Each trip finds Linder teamed up with a prominent science journalist, and together their words and pictures reveal the day-to-day details of how science actually gets done at the poles. This title includes breathtaking images of the stark polar landscape that alternate with gritty, close-up shots of scientists working in the field, braving physical danger and brutal conditions, and working with remarkable technology designed to survive the poles - like robotic vehicles that chart undersea mountain ranges - as they gather crucial information about our planet's distant past, and the risks that climate change poses for its future. The result is a combination travel book and paean to the hard work and dedication that underlies our knowledge of life on earth. "Science on Ice" takes readers to the farthest reaches of our planet; science has rarely been more exciting - or inspiring.
