Das Werk des französischen Soziologen und Philosophen Gabriel Tarde gehört zu den internationalen Wiederentdeckungen der letzten Jahre. Nach seinem Hauptwerk Die Gesetze der Nachahmung liegt nun auch seine außergewöhnliche Programmschrift Monadologie und Soziologie erstmals in deutscher Sprache vor. Im Jahre 1893 erschienen, stellt Monadologie und Soziologie die wohl konsequenteste wissenschaftstheoretische Weiterentwicklung der Gesetze der Nachahmung dar. In einer erstaunlich aktuellen Interpretation der Leibnizschen Monadenlehre wird die außerordentliche aktuelle sozialtheoretische Relevanz von Tardes Werk sichtbar. Gabriel Tarde war zu Lebzeiten neben Emile Durkheim die Hauptfigur der Soziologie in Frankreich. In seinem Hauptwerk Die Gesetze der Nachahmung von 1890 entwirft er eine Soziologie, die die Erklärung jeglicher gesellschaftlichen Veränderung aus dem Begriff der "Nachahmung" gewinnt: "Gesellschaft ist Nachahmung!" Anstatt den Blick auf Individuen und Gruppen zu richten, konzentriert sich Tarde auf die Handlungen und Ideen, nach denen diese Individuen und Gruppen klassifiziert werden. An ihnen liest er die Variablen und Regularitäten ab, die das Muster des Sozialen bilden. Diese Gesetzmäßigkeiten und die fundamentale Rolle der Nachahmung für soziale Phänomene überhaupt untersucht Tarde anhand einer Fülle von konkreten Beispielen aus allen Bereichen der Gesellschaft. Entstanden ist ein Meisterwerk der Soziologie, dessen Einfluß u. a. auf Gilles Deleuze, Bruno Latour, Peter Sloterdijk und die moderne Theorie der Meme von seiner ungebrochenen Aktualität zeugt.
