For Junya Ishigami (born 1974), architecture is a field of infinite possibilities that affect every area of life, raising existential questions and requiring both scientific and artistic observation. Here, the Japanese architect demonstrates what an environment that bases social life on organic principles might look like.

At once emphatically abstract and culturally specific, the work of Seung-taek Lee (born 1932) draws on the subtle beauty of Korean aesthetic traditions and folk art, also reflecting contemporaneous developments in earth art, Mono-ha and postminimalism—while maintaining resolute independence from its peer groups. Lee's oeuvre spans painting, drawing, sculpture, installation and performance, often within the same piece. Notions of negation—which he alternately refers to as “dematerialization,” “anti-concept,” and “non-sculpture”—structure his approach, by which he transforms ordinary objects, imbuing them with multiple meanings and affects. Embracing invisible forces and unorthodox materials such as tree branches, wire, stones, human hair, fabric and rope, his art elevates the mundane to the level of myth. This is the first English-language overview of his work.

In May 1968, while French young people were taking to the streets, three Latin American artists were exhibiting at the Musee d'Art moderne de la Ville de Paris: Wifredo Lam, Roberto Matta, and a woman, the sculptor Alicia Penalba. Born in Argentina, having begun her career in France in the 1950s, Penalba was at the height of her powers at that moment. Her totems and winged sculptures were sought after by museums and private collection in Europe and the United States, while her monumental works graced public spaces in France, Switzerland, Germany, and elsewhere. This volume, published by RM under a joint imprint with the Archivo Alicia Penalba and the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (MALBA), draws on the artist's personal archive, which contains a wide variety of documents and a magnificent collection of photographs. Lavishly illustrated, the book includes essays on Penalba by both Argentine and European scholars. It has been published on the occasion of a selective exhibition of the artist's work at the MALBA. Christine Ljubanovic’s portrait photographs of famous artists, curators, critics and writers lie between classic portraits and experience reports. Developed as a complete contact sheet, they are living reports of the artists’ encounters and also include the environment of the subject of the portrait. The publication shows for the first time an overview of conversation portraits by Christine Ljubanovic which have been created over the past forty years. During this time she met, amongst others, Thomas Hirschhorn, Gisèle Freund, Yoko Ono, Peter Weibel, Arnulf Rainer, Hans-Ulrich Obrist, Alfred Pacquement and Raoul Schrott, who has also contributed a poem to the volume. With the selection of 60 portraits she has thus produced a comprehensive picture of today’s artistic and cultural scene. In each case the artist and the subject of the portrait chose the meeting place together, so that it provides the framework for the photographic conversation.

A founding member of the Nouveau Realisme group, French artist Raymond Hains (1926-2005) was a perpetually restless innovator. In the 1940s he experimented with photograms and optical distortion; in the 1950s, he took torn posters from billboards and reprised them as paintings, pioneering an abstract realism, while also collaborating with the Lettrists; in 1960 he cofounded Nouveau Realisme alongside Klein, Spoerri, Tinguely and others, transposing construction hoardings into the gallery space and continuing his affichiste activities. In the '70s Hains worked with suitcases and narrative photographs; in his final phase, he devised his "macintoshages," collages of pop-up windows grabbed from a computer screen, and developed neon sculptures after the Borromean knots of Jacques Lacan. This book--the first comprehensive Hains monograph, created in collaboration with the artist's estate--follows his 60-year career, elaborating its context and references.

The world's most influential contemporary-art curator explores the history and practice of his craft Hans Ulrich Obrist curated his first exhibit in his kitchen when he was twenty-three years old. Since then he has staged more than 250 shows internationally, many of them among the most influential exhibits of our age. Ways of Curating is a compendium of the insights Obrist has gained from his years of extraordinary work in the art world. It skips between centuries and continents, flitting from meetings with the artists who have inspired him (including Gerhard Richter, Louise Bourgeois, and Gilbert and George) to biographies of influential figures such as Diaghilev and Walter Hopps. It describes some of the greatest exhibitions in history, as well as some of the greatest exhibitions never realized. It traces the evolution of collections from Athanasius Kircher's seventeenth-century Wunderkammer to modern museums, and points the way for projects yet to come. Obrist has rescued the word "curate" from wine stores and playlists to remind us of the power inherent in looking at art--and at the world--in a new way.

Calder in France, produced in collaboration with the Calder Foundation, is a tribute to Alexander Calder that focuses on the modern artist's long-standing relationship with France, beginning with his years in Paris from 1926 to 1933, during which time the artist firmly established his imprint on the avant-garde scene. After the war, Calder spent significant periods of time in Paris, Aix-en-Provence, and finally in Sach , where he would design his final monumental studio in 1963 that became in 1989 the Atelier Calder residency program. The revue contains images of Calder's work, interviews with Tadashi Kawamata, Abraham Cruzvillegas, and Rachel Harrison, a selection of images of past residents' work, and a special portfolio of models for new sculptures by 2014 resident Monika Sosnowska, highlights on Calder's relationship with former Cahiers d'Art publisher Christian Zervos through reproduction of pivotal essays on Calder published during the artist's lifetime, texts by Alexander S. C. Rower, Calder's grandson and President of the Calder Foundation, Susan Braeuer Dam, Director of Research and Publications at the Calder Foundation, and contributions by Alfred Pacquement, Rapha l Bouvier, Robert Rubin, and Hans-Ulrich Obrist. Accompanying the texts will be defining photographs of Calder and his work by Ugo Mulas and also Agnes Varda, with an interview by art historian Joan Simon.

Drawing on his own experiences and inspirations - from staging his first exhibition in his tiny Zurich kitchen in 1986 to encounters with artists, exhibition makers and thinkers - Hans Ulrich Obrist looks to inspire all those engaged in the creation of culture. Moving from meetings with artists to the creation of the first public museums in the 18th century, recounting the practice of inspirational figures such as Diaghilev, skipping between exhibitions, continents and centuries, Ways of Curating argues that curation is far from a static practice. Driven by curiosity, at its best it allows us to create the future.

Planet Earth needs a self-help book, and this is itThe future is happening to us far faster than we thought it would and this book explains whyFifty years after Marshall McLuhan's ground breaking book on the influence of technology on culture The Medium is the Massage, Shumon Basar, Douglas Coupland and Hans Ulrich Obrist extend the analysis to today, touring the world that's redefined by the Internet, decoding and explaining what they call the 'extreme present'. The Age of Earthquakes is a quick-fire paperback, harnessing the images, language and perceptions of our unfurling digital lives. The authors invent a glossary of new words to describe how we are truly feeling today; and 'mindsource' images and illustrations from over 30 contemporary artists. Wayne Daly's striking graphic design imports the surreal, juxtaposed, mashed mannerisms of screen to page. It's like a culturally prescient, all-knowing email to the reader: possibly the best email they will ever read. Welcome to The Age of Earthquakes, a paper portrait of Now, where the Internet hasn't just changed the structure of our brains these past few years, it's also changing the structure of the planet. This is a new history of the world that fits perfectly in your back pocket.

Following the success of Hans Ulrich Obrist's A Brief History of Curating, this publication gathers the influential curator's interviews with some of the foremost musicians and composers of the 1950s-1990s. It brings together leading avant-garde composers of the early postwar period such as Elliot Carter, Pierre Boulez and Karlheinz Stockhausen; pioneers of electroacoustic music such as Fran ois Bayle, Pauline Oliveros, Iannis Xenakis and Peter Zinovieff; minimalist and Fluxus-inspired artist-musicians such as Tony Conrad, Henry Flynt, Phil Niblock, Yoko Ono, Steve Reich and Terry Riley; and figures that have moved between classical/experimental realms and more pop terrain, such as Brian Eno, Kraftwerk, Howie B., Arto Lindsay and Caetano Veloso. Obrist's interviews map the evolution of the new music in Europe and America across all of its genres, from musique concr te to the recent hybridizations between pop and avant-garde, as techniques from both realms cross-pollinate. A Brief History of New Music is an ideal introduction to the experimental and new classical music of the past half-century.
