THIS volume, written in 1905 as a sequel to the same author's "Mont Saint Michel and Chartres," was privately printed, to the number of one hundred copies, in 1906, and sent to the persons interested, for their assent, correction, or suggestion. The idea of the two books was thus explained at the end of Chapter XXIX: - "Any schoolboy could see that man as a force must be measured by motion from a fixed point. Psychology helped here by suggesting a unit - the point of history when man held the highest idea of himself as a unit in a unified universe. Eight or ten years of study had led Adams to think he might use the century 1150-1250, expressed in Amiens Cathedral and the Works of Thomas Aquinas, as the unit from which he might measure motion down to his own time, without assuming anything as true or untrue, except relation. The movement might be studied at once in philosophy and mechanics. Setting himself to the task, he began a volume which he mentally knew as 'Mont-Saint-Michel and Chartres: a Study of Thirteenth-Century Unity.' From that point he proposed to fix a position for himself, which he could label: 'The Education of Henry Adams: a Study of Twentieth-Century Multiplicity.

Mont-Saint-Michel and ChartresBy Henry AdamsWith an introduction by Ralph Adams CramA meditative reflection on Medieval CultureMont Saint Michel and Chartres is a book written by the American historian and scholar Henry Adams (1838-1918). Adams wrote this book, a meditative reflection on medieval culture, well after his historical masterpiece, The History of the United States of America (1801-1817). Whereas the latter is a serious academic work of history, Mont Saint Michel and Chartres is far more whimsical, a playful meditative reflection on medieval culture. It was published privately in 1904, originally intended simply for his nieces; in 1913, it was made more widely available when published with the support of the American Institute of Architects. Despite having a far less serious intent than his earlier historical writings, Mont Saint Michel and Chartres has garnered high praise: for example, Maurice le Briton said, "Mont-Saint-Michel and Chartres is undoubtedly Adams's greatest work; though not apparently related to his earlier writings, this inspired work of poetry is the crowning achievement of his severe and somber historical oeuvre." A few years after Adams published Mont Saint Michel and Chartres, he published his most famous work, the Education of Henry Adams in 1907. Raymond Carney has said of this pair of works: "Taken together they may be read as Adams' spiritual autobiography--two monumental volumes in which he attempts to bring together in a vast synthesis all of his knowledge of politics, economics, psychology, science, philosophy, art, and literature in order to attempt to understand the individual's place in history and society."

DemocracyAn American NovelBy Henry AdamsDemocracy: An American Novel is a political novel written by Henry Brooks Adams and published anonymously in 1880. Only after the writer's death in 1918 did his publisher reveal Adams's authorship although, upon publication, the novel had immediately become popular. Contemporaneous conjecture placed the book under the joint authorship of Clarence King, John Hay and Henry Adams and their spouses who lived side by side on H street in Washington, D. C. and were collectively sometimes called "the Five of Hearts." First published anonymously, March 1880, and soon in various unauthorized editions. It wasn't until the 1925 edition that Adams was listed as author. Henry Adams remarked (ironically as usual), "The wholesale piracy of Democracy was the single real triumph of my life."--it was very popular, as readers tried to guess who the author was and who the characters really were. Chapters XII and XIII were originally misnumbered.

EstherA NovelBy Henry AdamsEsther is a novel by Henry Adams first published in 1884 under the pen name "Frances Snow Compton." The comic story deals with a young, freethinking socialite who falls desperately in love with an Episcopal minister. The result is a clash of intellects, a confrontation between faith and reason and a battle of the sexes. In a remote pew, hidden under a gallery of the transept, two persons looked on with especial interest. The number of strangers who crowded in after them forced them to sit closely together, and their low whispers of comment were unheard by their neighbors. Before the service began they talked in a secular tone." Wharton's window is too high-toned," said the man." You all said it would be like Aladdin's," murmured the woman." Yes, but he throws away his jewels," rejoined the man. "See the big prophet over the arch; he looks as though he wanted to come down--and I think he ought.""Did Michael Angelo ever take lessons of Mr. Wharton?" asked the woman seriously, looking up at the figures high above the pulpit." He was only a prophet," answered her companion, and, looking in another direction, next asked: "Who is the angel of Paradise, in the dove-colored wings, sliding up the main aisle?"

Awarded the Pulitzer Prize for non-fiction in 1919, "The Education of Henry Adams" is the autobiography of Henry Adams, the grandson of President John Quincy Adams, and the great-grandson of President John Adams. First published personally at his own expense in 1907, the book was not printed commercially in large numbers until his death in 1918. Born Henry Brooks Adams in 1838, he was educated at Harvard and was introduced to politics and diplomacy at a young age, when he served as secretary to his father, Charles Francis Adams, Abraham Lincoln's ambassador to the United Kingdom. During this time he worked as an anonymous foreign correspondent for the "New York Times". Between 1868 and 1877 Adams worked as a journalist focused on exposing political corruption and as a professor of medieval history at Harvard. Despite his accomplishments, Adams saw himself as a failure. He believed that his education did not properly prepare him for the demands of a world which was modernizing at a dynamic pace. He also felt that he did not live up to the legacy established by the lofty accomplishments of his ancestors. This thoughtful and intimate book remains an important document of 19th century American history and political life. Adams, one of America's most important historians, journalists, and novelists, shows in this great work of literature that he was anything but a failure. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.

After serving as President Thomas Jefferson's spokesman in the House, he broke with the president in 1805 as a result of what he saw as the dilution of traditional Jeffersonian principles as well as perceived mistreatment during the impeachment of Samuel Chase, in which Randolph served as chief prosecutor. 1] Following this split, Randolph proclaimed himself the leader of the "Old Republicans" or "Tertium Quids", an arch-conservative wing of the Democratic-Republican Party who wanted to restrict the role of the federal government. Specifically, Randolph promoted the Principles of '98, which said that individual states could judge the constitutionality of central government laws and decrees, and could refuse to enforce laws deemed unconstitutional.... The Education of Henry Adams is an autobiography that records the struggle of Bostonian Henry Adams (1838-1918), in his later years, to come to terms with the dawning 20th century, so different from the world of his youth. It is also a sharp critique of 19th-century educational theory and practice. In 1907, Adams began privately circulating copies of a limited edition printed at his own expense. Commercial publication of the book had to await its author's 1918 death, whereupon it won the 1919 Pulitzer Prize. The Modern Library placed it first in a list of the top 100 English-language nonfiction books of the 20th century.
