ENGLISH DESCRIPTION "It is, at the same time, a descent into hell and a book about what makes us human." --Junot D az A month after being forced to leave El Salvador upon receiving a death threat for insulting the president, our drunk and sex addict narrator faces a rare assignment: reviewing a report that details perfectly the genocide suffered by indigenous peoples in a Central-American country. What at first seems like a promising job will become an endless task clouded by suspicion: a descent into hell by those who survived unspeakable carnage, bifront creatures of fascination and horror. Opening Pandora's box, revealing what happened not so long ago at that place where he now lives as a recluse will leave him at the mercy of crimes that somehow don't belong exclusively in the past, but are lurking close. Horacio Castellanos Moya is the author of the best portrait ever written about the terror, the paranoia, and the fear that follow the horrors perpetrated in Central-American countries. Once again, we confirm the extraordinary narrative pulse of an expert in examining the health of a continent installed in perpetual anguish.

Con La Congoja de la Pasada Tormenta (Casi Todos Los Cuentos) / With the Anguish of the Past Storm (Almost All the Stories)

Clemente would rather stay out of it, but events come to a head over the course of one long weekend as the Arag n family is inextricably caught up in the conflict that is shaking the nation. ENGLISH DESCRIPTION Castellanos Moya's most thrilling book to date, about the senselessness of tyranny. The tyrant of Horacio Castellanos Moya's ambitious new novel is the actual pro-Nazi mystic Maximiliano Hern ndez Mart nez -- known as the Warlock -- who came to power in El Salvador in 1932. An attempted coup in April, 1944, failed, but a general strike in May finally forced him out of office. Tyrant Memory takes place during the month between the coup and the strike. Its protagonist, Hayd e Aragon, is a well-off woman, whose husband is a political prisoner and whose son, Clemente, after prematurely announcing the dictator's death over national radio during the failed coup, is forced to flee when the very much alive Warlock starts to ruthlessly hunt down his enemies. The novel moves between Hayd e political awakening in diary entries and Clemente's frantic and often hysterically comic efforts to escape capture. Tyrant Memory -- sharp, grotesque, moving, and often hilariously funny -- is an unforgettable incarnation of a country's history in the destiny of one family.

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION "Castellanos Moya is a star figure in the progressing second boom in Latin American literature." --Norman Rush, The New York Review of Books The hate and grudge of Do a Lena, mother of Teti, an only child, and wife of Don Erasmo Mira Brossa, lawyer and head of the Honduran National Party, are as powerful as fire itself: if fed, it ends up consuming everything until it comes crumbling down. But Do a Lena's hot temper will not keep Teti from marrying Clemente, a divorced Salvadorian, twenty years her senior, and with the stigma of communism. The broken bonds of the Mira Brossa family are irreparable, and Teti, Clemente, and their son, Eri, will be forced to leave Honduras to settle in El Salvador. It is the year 1969, and the war between Honduras and El Salvador threatens to shatter the fragile foundations of Do a Lena's relationship with her daughter, whom, despite the threats of her disgruntled and tormented mother, refuses to return to her native country, not even after the tragic, mysterious death of her husband. The volcanic nature of the matriarch is the common denominator in the story of this Honduran family, narrated with the author's trademark style and a sharp, acrid tone that plunges the reader into a flow of mixed feelings where the protagonists struggle.

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION Castellanos Moya's most emblematic and controversial book. Selected by Babelia among the 100 best books of the last 25 years. Revulsion, one of Castellanos Moya's most celebrated novels is undoubtedly the most controversial of his works, and one for which readers in his country will always remember him. It is written in a single paragraph and alive with a fury as astringent as the wrath of Thomas Bernhard. The result is an extraordinarily incisive and scathing novel, a settling of accounts, and a fierce criticism of his country; a work for which he received death threats that forced him into exile. Due to his mother's passing, professor Edgardo Vega returns to El Salvador from an 18-year exile in Canada. For Vega, returning to his native country means having to face a despicable, repulsive, and ignorant country, a place that gives him great anxiety and nausea. He confides all of this to Moya, an old classmate, and is offered to the reader in the form of a torrential monologue in which Vega attacks everything and everyone, in a fierce and ruthless criticism from which not even his family is excluded. Roberto Bola o called Revulsion "Castellanos Moya's darkest book and perhaps his best. A parody of certain works by Bernhard, and the kind of book that makes you laugh out loud."

Charles Finch, The New York Times«Herlig komisk og urovekkende (…)

A sensitive idealist and an aggrieved motor mouth, he sits at a bar with the author, Castellanos Moya, from five to seven in the evening, telling his tale and ranting against everything his country has to offer. Written in a single paragraph and alive with a fury as astringent as the wrath of Thomas Bernhard, Revulsion was first published in 1997 and earned its author death threats. High-octane paranoia deranges a writer and fuels a dangerous plan to return home at the tail end of El Salvador's long civil war. Is the plan a dream or a nightmare? Is he courageous, foolhardy, or just plain dumb? Is the bubbling brew of horrors and threats actual or imagined? After he seeks relief for liver pain through hypnosis (while drinking more than ever, despite the treatments), his few impulse-control mechanisms rapidly dissolve, and reality only rarely intrudes on his cogitations. Harebrained murder plots, half-mad arguments, hysterical rants: the narrative escalates at a maniacal pace, infused with Horacio Castellanos Moya's uniquely outlandish and acerbic sense of humor.

A boozing, sex-obsessed writer finds himself employed by the Catholic Church (an institution he loathes) to proofread a 1,100 page report on the army's massacre and torture of thousands of indigenous villagers a decade earlier, including the testimonies of the survivors. The writer's job is to tidy it up: he rants, "that was what my work was all about, cleaning up and giving a manicure to the Catholic hands that were piously getting ready to squeeze the balls of the military tiger." Mesmerized by the strange Vallejo-like poetry of the Indians' phrases ("the houses they were sad because no people were inside them"), the increasingly agitated and frightened writer is endangered twice over: by the spell the strangely beautiful heart-rending voices exert over his tenuous sanity, and by real danger—after all, the murderers are the very generals who still run this unnamed Latin American country.

As El Salvador returns to peace after more than a decade of civil war, Eduardo Sosa, an unemployed sociologist, becomes fascinated by a homeless man who lives in a beat-up yellow Chevrolet parked across the street from his sister’s apartment. An unexpected turn of events causes Sosa to assume the other man’s identity. When he becomes the driver of the mysterious yellow Chevrolet, Sosa discovers that it is home to four poisonous snakes. With the snakes as accomplices, Sosa unleashes a reign of terror on the city of San Salvador. Dance With Snakes is a macabre high-speed romp, in which violence and comedy become almost indistinguishable. The non-stop action raises provocative questions about social exclusion and the role of the media, but this novel by the author of the acclaimed Senselessness also evokes the tenderness of relations among those on society’s margins.
