Onko kapitalismilla tulevaisuutta? on viiden maailmankuulun yhteiskunnan ja globalisaation tutkijan yhteisteos, jossa kirjoittajat pohtivat eri näkökulmista kapitalismin tulevaisuutta. Romahtaako kapitalismi aiempien yhteiskuntajärjestelmien tavoin? Romahtihan Rooman valtakunta, samoin Euroopan vanhat monarkiat neuvostoimperiumista puhumattakaan. Synkkyydestään huolimatta kirjassa on optimistinen vire. Ehkä tästä teoksesta on apua talouskriisin ratkaisemisessa? Onko kapitalismilla tulevaisuutta? on ensimmäinen kerta, kun kansainvälisesti tunnettujen sosiologien joukko on tehnyt yhdessä teoksen, joka osallistuu nykykeskusteluun vailla akateemisen keskustelun vaikeaselkoisuutta ja kiemuroita. Teos on sosiologisen ajattelun huipentuma, mutta samalla kirja, jota on nautinnollista lukea. Ajankohtaisuudessaan ja iskevyydessään se on vertaansa vailla. Kirja julkaistaan suomeksi Vastapainon ja Gaudeamuksen yhteistyönä.

In the spring of 1968, Columbia University erupted. Students occupied buildings, confronted the university’s administration, and demanded institutional change in a watershed moment for American activism. As both witness and participant, renowned sociologist Immanuel Wallerstein captured this pivotal uprising with unparalleled clarity and insight. This essential reissue of University in Turmoil returns Wallerstein’s penetrating analysis to a new generation grappling with similar questions of power, purpose, and protest within academic institutions. His firsthand account illuminates not just what happened during those tumultuous weeks, but why those events still matter in our ongoing struggle to reimagine the university as a site of social transformation. This new edition features a thought-provoking and comprehensive introduction by political theorist Jodi Dean that situates this work within Wallerstein’s broader intellectual project, from world-systems analysis to his critiques of global capitalism, to demonstrate how the Columbia conflict connects to Wallerstein's groundbreaking theories on structural inequality, institutional power, and social movements. As today’s students confront issues from climate justice to racial equity, from economic precarity to geopolitical conflict, Wallerstein’s insights resonate with renewed urgency, revealing the university not merely as a backdrop for protest but as a contested terrain where broader societal struggles are enacted and reimagined. Both historical document and theoretical framework, University in Turmoil offers an indispensable perspective for anyone seeking to understand the complex relationship between academic institutions, student activism, and social change—then and now.

Examining the concept of TimeSpace in the work of Immanuel Wallerstein and its crucial role within world-systems analysis, Uncertainties of Time brings together important but previously hard-to-access material from Wallerstein’s writings. TimeSpace is a concept developed from Wallerstein’s earliest days in the 1970s until well-into the twenty-first century, drawing from the historian Fernand Braudel and the chemist Ilya Prigogine, to rethink historical time’s two overlooked modes—long enduring or eternal time, on the one hand, and, on the other, uncertainty in world-systems. He, thereby, invented a fresh innovation of historical social sciences that brought together economics, politics, and sociology. This book is an essential volume for understanding Wallerstein’s unique contributions to the understanding of the Modern World-System, which he argued came to an end after the world revolution of 1968—leaving us now in an indeterminate world of chaos. This book is thereby invaluable as a resource for researchers and students who care about the history and decline of our chaotic world.

In The Global Left: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow, Immanuel Wallerstein takes stock of the practices of the left, historically in the time of its great ideals and today in the midst of the global crisis of capitalism. He underlines the urgency of seeing the emergence of a global and united left that can pave the way out of the centuries-old domination of capital, considering antisystemic movements, dilemmas of the left in relation to the structural crisis of the modern world-system, and tactics and strategies for political action. The book includes new essays by Étienne Balibar, James K. Galbraith, Johan Galtung, Nilüfer Göle, Pablo González Casanova, and Michel Wieviorka in conversation with Wallerstein’s core ideas.

Building on an analysis of the dissenting movements to have emerged since the rise of modern capitalism, Anti-Systemic Movements uncovers an international groundswell of resistance still vitally active at the end of the twentieth century. The authors suggest that the new assertiveness of the South, the development of class struggle in the East and the emergence of rainbow coalitions in various regions hold fresh promise for emancipatory politics. Taking the year 1968 as a symbolic turning point, the authors argue that new anti-systemic movements have arisen which challenge the logic of the capitalist world-system.

Immanuel Wallerstein is one of the most important and yet controversial thinkers and activists of our time, writing on a wide range of topics from global economics and international politics. To Wallerstein, capitalist world-system, which was created over the last five hundred years, and whose main ideology was liberalism, has been going through a deep structural crisis since the 1970s. He maintains that this system will be replaced by other and perhaps better systems in the mid or long run. In his works in last few decades, Wallerstein has devoted almost all of his energy and time analyzing and explaining how the capitalist system could be replaced by a better system. In that regards, he considers Islamism as one of the most important dissenting movements in the World-System, but necessarily as a powerful force to replace it. This volume contains his articles and commentaries on Islam, the Middle East and the World-System, all of which were published since the Arab Spring.

This book examines the changing nature of global inequalities and efforts that are being made to move toward a more egalitarian world society. The contributors are world historical sociologists and geographers who place the contemporary issues of unequal power, wealth and income in a global historical perspective. The geographers examine the roles of geopolitics and patterns of warfare in the historical development of the modern world-system, and the sociologists examine endeavours to improve the situations of poor peoples and nations and to engage the challenges of sustainability that are linked with global inequalities. Overcoming Global Inequalities contains cutting-edge research from engaged social scientists intended to help humanity deal with the challenges of global inequality in the 21st century.

Uncertain Worlds is the definitive presentation of the evolution of world-systems analysis from the point of view of its founder, Immanuel Wallerstein. Few theorists have offered a more systematic theory of what has become known as 'globalisation' than Wallerstein. The book includes a one-of-kind interview with Wallerstein by Carlos Rojas, a conversation between Wallerstein and Lemert about the history of the field as it has come down to the present time, a long essay by Lemert on the uncertainties of the modern world-system, as well as a preface by Rojas and a concluding essay by Wallerstein. No other book lends such biographical, historical, and personal nuance to the biography of world-systems analysis and, thus, to the history of our times. The will be a key reference book for students of global politics, economics and international relations.

In this short, highly readable book, the master of world-systems theory provides a succinct anatomy of capitalism over the past five hundred years. Considering the way capitalism has changed and evolved over the centuries, and what has remained constant, he outlines its chief characteristics. In particular, he looks at the emergence and development of a world market, and of labor; in doing so, he argues that capitalism has brought about immiseration in the Global South. As long as they remain within a framework of world capitalism, Wallerstein concludes, the economic and social problems of developing countries will remain unresolved. Historical Capitalism, published here with its companion essay Capitalist Civilization, is a concise, compelling beginners' guide to one of the most challenging and influential assessments of capitalism as a world-historic mode of production.

Immanuel Wallerstein's highly influential, multi-volume opus, "The Modern World-System", is one of this century's greatest works of social science. An innovative, panoramic reinterpretation of global history, it traces the emergence and development of the modern world from the sixteenth to the twentieth century. This new volume encompasses the nineteenth century from the revolutionary era of 1789 to the First World War. In this crucial period, three great ideologies - conservatism, liberalism, and radicalism - emerged in response to the worldwide cultural transformation that came about when the French Revolution legitimized the sovereignty of the people. Wallerstein tells how capitalists, and Great Britain, brought relative order to the world and how liberalism triumphed as the dominant ideology.
