All Loves Excelling is John Bunyan's sermon on Ephesians 3:17-18, 'That ye ... may be able to comprehend with all saints, what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; and to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge.' It was first titled 'The Saints' Knowledge of Christ s Love' and is worthy of being ranked alongside Sibbes and deals with a much neglected subject area. The subject matter of this work which was first preached, is greatly needed today. On the one hand, experiences of the Spirit are being claimed from which the glory of the redeemer and the wonder of his love are quite absent, while on the other, an almost total attention to the understanding and practising of scripture truth is having the effect of marginalising the experiential element in true, spiritual knowledge. Bunyan's description of Christ's love to believers and how they ought to know it, cuts in both the above-mentioned directions. From some 440 Bible references he shows how knowing Christ's love is the message of Scripture and also the essence of heaven, partly possessed and expressed on earth. Those who know it are rich beyond measure and they are the people who 'sweeten the churches and bring glory to God and to religion'.
Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners
John Bunyan, born in England in 1628, was a well-known Puritan preacher and author. He is most famous for his allegorical work "The Pilgrim's Progress", a story of the Christian pilgrimage toward salvation and widely considered one of the most important works of religious English literature. "The Pilgrim's Progress" was published in 1678, but was written several years earlier during Bunyan's time in prison from 1660 to 1672, when he was sentenced to twelve years for holding unlicensed church services outside of the established Church of England. During his imprisonment, Bunyan also completed "Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners", an autobiography recounting the story of his own conversion from a life of sin and impiety to one of virtue and spiritual regeneration. "Grace Abounding to the Chief of Sinners" was published in 1666 and illustrates the tenets of Puritanism through what Bunyan saw as God's saving grace in his own life. He reflects on his sinful youth and how faith led him away from an impious adulthood. Those who read this work are comforted by Bunyan's honest admission to feelings of despair and doubt; even today, many people can identify with his struggles, and find inspiration in his faith and religious conviction. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.

"In this little book thou art presented with a discourse of the grace of God, and of salvation by that grace, in which discourse thou shalt find how each person in the Godhead doth his part in salvation of the sinner. If thou findest me short in these things, impute that to my love of brevity; if thou findest me beside the truth in aught, impute that to mine infirmity. But if thou findest any thing here that serveth to thy furtherance and joy of faith, impute that to the mercy of God bestowed on thee and me." - John Bunyan

This Christian Classic - The Barren Fig Tree -- introduces and orients the reader to critical biblical/theological thinking. Bunyan's presentation is written with a clarity that fosters biblical thought and facilitates Bible comprehension. You won't be disappointed. John Bunyan--author of Pilgrim's Progress, at one time second only to the Bible in its popularity--writes on Jesus' parable of the "barren fig tree" which was given a second chance: three years to bear fruit. Bunyan himself was imprisoned for the Gospel, and uses his broad knowledge of Scripture to paint a worthy picture of God's mercy and justice in this parable: he gives every man and woman time and a chance to seek repentance, but the time does not last forever. It's impossible to measure the influence of John Bunyan over the centuries. His works remain in print and are widely read, which shouldn't surprise us.
