The Arden Shakespeare
2012
nidottu
The Island Princess is a tragicomic romance set in the Spice Islands of Indonesia. Fletcher rewrites Shakespeare's The Tempest through the encounter of Islam and Christianity and the fierce European competition for wealth at the farthest reaches of empire. The play also stages the degeneration of religious tolerance into fanaticism. This ground-breaking edition explores the play in its gendered, political, social and religious contexts whilst also finding its resonances for a twenty-first century audience. The critical introduction and on-page commentary notes create an ideal teaching text giving a comprehensive account of the play from both literary and performance perspectives.

Kuudesta vaimostaan tunnettu kuningas Henrik VIII (1491-1547) on Shakespearen näytelmässä monisärmäinen, kunnioitettava hahmo. Hovin ja kirkon valtajuonitteluun kytkeytyy kuninkaan avioero katolisesta Katariina Aragonialaisesta sekä uusi suhde Anne Boleyniin, josta tuli kuningatar Elisabet I:n äiti. Teos on kirjoitettu Elisabetin seuraajan Jaakko I:n valtakaudella."

Lopulta miehet kohtaavat toisensa kaksintaistelussa. Kaksi jalosukuista perustuu Geoffrey Chaucerin Canterburyn tarinoiden Ritarin tarinaan. Shakespeare kirjoitti tämän tragikomedian yhdessä John Fletcherin kanssa, joka aikoinaan veti hänelle vertoja suosiossa näytelmäkirjailijana." Kahden jalosukuisen hyväksyminen Shakespeare-kaanoniin on ollut pitkä tie. Paavo Cajander ei suomentanut sitä, eikä muitakaan suomennoksia ole, mikä on iloinen asia suomentajalle - koska pääsee tekemään korkkaamatonta Shakespearea", kirjoittaa suomentaja Lauri Sipari esipuheessaan.

Empire of Women & One of our Cities is Missing

Armchair Fiction presents extra large editions of classic science fiction double novels, complete with original illustrations. The first novel, "Empire of Women," is by veteran science fiction author, John Fletcher. The secrets of eternal youth... That was the reward the men of Konapar were desperately looking for when they decided to stage an attack on the long-living women of the planet Phira. And it was this invasion scenario that one of the cagiest space pirates in the entire galaxy fell into. After encountering a mighty fleet of Konaparian warships, Captain Gan Alain and his indomitable crew were more or less "drafted" by the Regent of Konapar. Alain's vessel, the Warspear, was to be a main support ship to the Regent as the attack on Phira commenced; for it was well known that nowhere in space was there a man who had the savvy and no-how of Captain Gan Alain. But fighting against women was something new to the Captain, and like wild horses, brutal men can be tamed-and greedy men can be bought The second novel, "One of our Cities is Missing," written by Sci-fi author Irving Cox, is a riveting portrayal of the horrors of nuclear war. There were cities being vaporized across America. The Communists had finally made their big move. Unfortunately, it was the big "nuclear" move. Stark terror and total devastation enveloped the face of the planet. Who would save humanity when the trusted leaders of government could no longer be trusted? In this riveting portrayal of the horrors of nuclear war, veteran science fiction author Irving Cox shows us that it's the "little" people who will likely survive the horrors of nuclear war. Facing seemingly insurmountable odds, they band together in an effort to bring peace to a world in tatters-peace and a semblance of sanity to a devastated mankind. But while their intentions are noble, their chances of success seem decidedly low...
Cardenio

Cardenio

Set in the heat and dust of Andalusia in seventeenth-century Spain, Cardenio is the story of a friendship betrayed, with all the elements of a thriller: disguise, dishonour and deceit. A woman is seduced, a bride is forced to the altar, and a man runs mad among the mountains of the Sierra Morena. The history of the play is every bit as thrilling, and this text is the result of a masterful act of literary archaeology by the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Chief Associate Director Gregory Doran, to re-imagine a previously lost play by Shakespeare. Based on an episode in Cervantes’ Don Quixote, the play known as Cardenio by Shakespeare and John Fletcher was performed at court in 1612. A copy of their collaboration has never been found; however, it is claimed that Double Falshood by Lewis Theobald is an eighteenth-century adaptation of it. Since Theobald’s play misses out some crucial scenes in the plot, Doran has turned to the Cervantes original to supply the missing episodes, using the original English translation by Thomas Shelton (1612) that Fletcher and Shakespeare must themselves have read. Cardenio re-opened the Swan Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon, as part of the Royal Shakespeare Company's fiftieth birthday season in 2011.
