Jonathan Thomas

Presents recent work by the Brooklyn-based artist known for unsettling works that contend with such topics as domesticity, the body, consumer culture, fashion, and violence. The boxing term "gloves off"-frequently used as a metaphor to characterize brutal political campaigns and post-9/11 military interrogation-aptly describes the subtle aggressions in American popular culture that Sara Greenberger Rafferty lays bare. Blurring the lines between two and three dimensions, Rafferty attaches her wall-mounted works using custom-painted screws that break up the images. She also deploys cracked paint resembling viscous bodily fluids, further "wounding" the objects. Over the past decade, Rafferty has referenced the language, gestures, and props associated with stand-up comedy. This exhibition includes a new large-scale work entitled "Jokes on You," featuring images of ephemera from the collections of the National Museum of American History, which was part of Rafferty's study during her Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship. Index cards from the Phyllis Diller "Gag File," scanned and recontextualized by Rafferty, underscore the trauma associated with cultural mores that assert control over women's bodies, such as marriage and consumerism.

John Springford considers significant developments in trade, investment, the labour market and immigration, and productivity and offers a refreshing evidence-based account of how the UK economy has changed outside the EU. Catherine Barnard and Joel Reland examine the legal and regulatory landscape post-Brexit, and assess what ‘taking back control’ has meant in practice for the UK’s legal landscape. Finally, Jonathan Thomas looks at immigration since 2016, examining policy and trends since the referendum and considering the impact which Brexit has had on both immigration to, and emigration from, the UK. He focuses on what has really happened, moving beyond rhetoric and soundbites to provide an unbiased and non-partisan account. With a foreword by renowned political sociologist Katy Hayward, Brexit and the UK Constitution offers a grounded, factual, and authoritative contribution to understanding Brexit’s implications ten-years on from the referendum.

"A strong case can be made that The Color over Occam is the best Lovecraftian novel ever written, and one of the best weird novels of any kind written in the last half-century."-S. T. Joshi, The Rise, Fall, and Rise of the Cthulhu MythosJeff Slater, a worker in the city government of Occam (the new name of Arkham, Massachusetts) is increasingly troubled by disturbing impurities in the Occam water supply-and even more disturbed by the apparent refusal of his superiors to investigate the matter. Slater, who is also an amateur paranormal sleuth, undertakes an increasingly harried and dangerous investigation that reveals unimaginable horrors, many of them taking place under the underground sewer system of this seemingly placid town. Jonathan Thomas, a veteran author of Lovecraftian fiction, brings all the strengths of his writing-deft, loving charactgerisation; a complex, multi-layered plot; an ability to vivify his chosen setting, whether it be a teeming metropolis or the untenated wilderness; and, most of all, a pungently satirical, almost jaundiced view of human foibles and failings-to this novel of cataclysmic terror. While an avowed sequel to "The Colour out of Space," The Color over Occam creates an ambiance of dread that is distinctively the author's own. Jonathan Thomas, a native and longtime resident of Providence, R. I., has written six short story collections, all published by Hippocampus Press. His collected Lovecraftian tales appeared from Centipede Press as Malign Providence (2022).

We are busy and constantly bombarded. Notifications, pings, alerts: we carry in our pockets devices that are designed to capture and keep our attention. We are never fully present, always thinking ahead to the next thing, distracted by an email, playing worries over in our minds. But what effect is this having on our lives, relationships and, most importantly, our spiritual health? We need rest – the rest that only Christ can give. But this book is not simply meant to get you off your phone, make more time to stop, or help you simplify and digitally detox. Instead, you are invited into the greatest life imaginable, where we have the openness to be interrupted by God and used in a way that will bring Him glory. At the end of each chapter, Thomas encourages us to take time to ponder and pray – or Selah – and gives us guiding questions to consider. A challenging read for anyone who feels overwhelmed by all that calls on their attention and for those who long for peace.

A few months ago, I started a picture series on our social media channels chronicling my over 20 years of travel to Britain through my personal 100 favorite pictures of Britain that I've taken over the years. The goal was to countdown to my trip and build up the excitement with our followers. But I was also working on a secret project with those 100 pictures concurrently. I've been laying them out into a special hardcover book which we're announcing today. It's called Visions of Anglotopia: A Personal Tour of Britain. When I started this project in the spring, I wanted to show everyone MY Britain and what it means to me. I started with my first trip to Britain in 2001, and I finished with my last trip there in 2018 when we drove from Land's End to John O'Groats. In between, I shared pictures from the rise, crash, and rebirth of Anglotopia. Now, these pictures are together in one place, in a special, limited edition hardcover book. I've always wanted to make a hardcover photography book with pretty pictures of Britain, and this seems as good a time as any to do it The book measures 8.5 inches by 8.5 inches square. It is hardcover, with a dust jacket. It's printed on high-quality paper using a premium printing process (different from what we use for our magazine and other books). This is a unique project for us - we've not done a large hardcover photography book, so it's important that we sell as many as possible in advance to help keep printing costs under control. The book is pretty much done, as I've been working on it for the last three months. We have decided to produce just 250 copies. We hope to sell them all. I do hope you will order a copy of this book. It's rather special, and I think Anglotopia readers will love it.

Jonathan Thomas, with his vibrant prose, his keen eye for human foibles, and his ability to generate an atmosphere of grisly terror, can take his place as a leading weird writer of this century. This sixth collection of his weird stories contains a wealth of narratives, long and short, that have made him one of the most acclaimed writers of supernatural fiction in the past two decades. Thomas excels in the elaboration of themes and motifs found in the work of H. P. Lovecraft, and in this volume such tales as "The Once and Future Waite," "A Box from Blackstone," and "Avenging Angela" extrapolate upon both Lovecraft's stories and Lovecraft himself as a complex and enigmatic figure. Several are set in Lovecraft's hometown of Providence, R. I. Thomas's skill in the evocation of terrors from the remote past-whether it be the Neolithic age or the era of Romans and Celts-is exemplified in "The Shaman's Smile," "Nos Morituri," "Flouting Pascal," "After the Legions," and "Grave Days in Skara Brae." But Thomas doesn't hesitate to infuse weirdness in contemporary everyday life, as in "The Uncanny Comeback of E" and "One Across." The fusion of the ancient and the modern is at the heart of "Widow's Walk," "A Dip in the Bog," "Lead On, Vergil," and "The Muybridge Cocktail."
