To aid in this needed information and mental training, this instructive work is now made accessible to English readers, and is commended to the serious study of the serious. The teachings contained in this work are hung on an episode in recent French history. With some this fact may detract of its value. A pedantic, supercilious notion is extensively abroad among us that we are an "Anglo Saxon" nation; and an equally pedantic, supercilious habit causes many to look to England for inspiration, as from a racial birthplace Nevertheless, for weal or for woe, there is no such thing extant as "Anglo-Saxon"--of all nations, said to be "Anglo-Saxon," in the United States least. What we still have from England, much as appearances may seem to point the other way, is not of our bone-and-marrow, so to speak, but rather partakes of the nature of "importations." We are no more English on account of them than we are Chinese because we all drink tea.

Marx geht in dieser Kritik der "deutschen Zust nde" von der Religion aus, welche er als "Opium des Volkes" bezeichnet (womit er eine Formulierung von Heinrich Heine zuspitzte). Doch im Sinne der Emanzipation ist ber eine "Kritik des Himmels" hinaus f r Marx eine "Kritik der Politik" notwendig, welche nicht alleine durch die Philosophie, sondern nur durch das Handeln der Klasse des Proletariats erfolgen k nne. Dem Bild Hegels von der Philosophie als der "Eule der Minerva", die "erst mit der einbrechenden D mmerung ihren Flug" beginnt, setzt Marx am Ende seiner Einleitung das "Schmettern des gallischen Hahns" entgegen, durch welches, "wenn alle innern Bedingungen erf llt sind", der "deutsche Auferstehungstag" verk ndet werde.

Ce rapport de Marx pour le conseil g n ral de la Premi re Internationale illustre dans les grandes lignes la th se de la plus-value qu'il d veloppera plus tard dans Le Capital. Ce texte est une premi re approche de l'analyse de Marx du mode de production et de la contradiction entre valeur et travail. La diff rence entre le salariat et l'esclavage ne se distingue en fin de compte que dans la mani re dont est extorqu le travail aux populations.

Marx a consacr plus de 20 ans de sa vie l' criture de cette oeuvre, mais n'en a achev qu'une partie: le premier livre, publi en 1867 et d dicac Wilhelm Wolff, consacr au d veloppement de la production capitaliste. C'est en observant l'industrie britannique contemporaine et ses conditions de travail ainsi qu'en s'appuyant sur les pr c dents th oriciens de l' conomie politique (tels que David Ricardo ou Adam Smith) et en les critiquant que Marx entend d montrer la nature r elle du capitalisme, et mettre l'accent sur les contradictions internes de ce syst me. The present volume consists of a translation of some of Karl Marx's principal writings during the six years 1844-1850. In 1843 Marx was twenty-five years old. He had just married, apparently on the strength of the modest salary he was to receive for editing, jointly with Arnold Ruge, a periodical called the Deutsch-Franz sische Jahrb cher (Franco-German Annuals), the purpose of which was to promote the union of German philosophy with French social science.
