The art and craft of writing by one of the few grandmasters of American literature, a bonanza for writers and readers written by Kurt Vonnegut's former student. Here is an entirely new side of Kurt Vonnegut, Vonnegut as a teacher of writing. Of course he's given us glimpses before, with aphorisms and short essays and articles and in his speeches. But never before has an entire book been devoted to Kurt Vonnegut the teacher. Here is pretty much everything Vonnegut ever said or wrote having to do with the writing art and craft, altogether a healing, a nourishing expedition. McConnell has outfitted us for the journey, and in these 37 chapters covers the waterfront of how one American writer brought himself to the pinnacle of the writing art, and we can all benefit as a result. Kurt Vonnegut was one of the few grandmasters of American literature, whose novels continue to influence new generations about the ways in which our imaginations can help us to live. Few aspects of his contribution have not been plumbed--fourteen novels, collections of his speeches, his essays, his letters, his plays--so this fresh view of him, written by a former student, is a bonanza for writers and readers and Vonnegut fans everywhere.

A woman with a little boy has two suitors: a doctor and a vacuum cleaner salesman. Her husband a famous big-game hunter and adventurer disappeared years ago in the Amazon. She is about to be declared a widow when in he walks khaki breeches puttees and all together with the pilot with whom he crashed in the Amazon valley. It happens to be his birthday an event which all those present had decided to celebrate and for which they had just purchased a cake on the spur of the moment. The cake had been intended for somebody named Wanda June who apparently never got to celebrate at all. The adventurer turns out to be a wild champion of havoc who alienates friends and demolishes violins. He fails in his effort to get his son to shoot him - the boy doesn't believe in that kind of old-fashioned heroism - and then in his own effort to shoot himself. He is a social flop out.
"Everything was perfectly swell. There were no prisons, no slums, no insane asylums, no cripples, no poverty, no wars. All diseases were conquered. So was old age. Death, barring accidents, was an adventure for volunteers. The population of the United States was stabilized at forty-million souls." "2 B R 0 2 B" is a science fiction short story by Kurt Vonnegut, originally published in 1962, The title is pronounced "2 B R naught 2 B", referencing the famous phrase "to be, or not to be" from William Shakespeare's Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. In the story, the title refers to the telephone number one dials to schedule an assisted suicide with the Federal Bureau of Termination. The setting is a society in which aging has been cured, individuals have indefinite lifespans, and population control is used to limit the population of the United States to forty million. This is maintained through a combination of infanticide and government-assisted suicide - in short, in order for someone to be born, someone must first volunteer to die. As a result, births are few and far between, and deaths occur primarily by accident. "2 B R 0 2 B" was the basis for the 2016 Canadian short film 2BR02B To Be or Naught to Be directed by Marco Checa Garcia which premiered at the Sci-Fi-London festival in April 2016. The story was also the basis for another 2016 short film "2BR02B" directed by Tom Morash, and produced by Megan Jordan with Gold Leaf Films. Kurt Vonnegut was a prolific and genre-bending American novelist known for works blending satire, black comedy and science fiction, such as Slaughterhouse-Five, Cat's Cradle, and Breakfast of Champions. He was also known for his humanist beliefs and being honorary president of the American Humanist Association.
Sun Moon Star is the story of the birth of Jesus--as told by Kurt Vonnegut. This children's book takes the newborn Jesus' perspective, offering beautiful and insightful descriptions of the world from someone newly born into it. In this book, we follow Jesus and meet the people most important to his life--presented in new and surprising ways. A powerful departure from Vonnegut's more adult work, Sun Moon Star gives readers a rare glimpse of the writer's talent in a format that's unique and unexpected. Originally published in 1980, the book is long out of print, but is available as an E-book.
Best known as one of America's most astonishing and enduring contemporary novelists, Kurt Vonnegut was also a celebrated commencement address giver. Vonnegut never graduated from college, so his words to any class of graduating seniors always carried the delight, and gentle irony, of someone savoring an achievement he himself had not had occasion to savor on his own behalf. "But about my Uncle Alex, who is up in Heaven now," Vonnegut, an avowed Humanist, would say sometimes in a graduation speech, "one of the things he found objectionable about human beings was that they so rarely noticed it when they were happy. . . . We could be drinking lemonade in the summertime, and Uncle Alex would interrupt the conversation to say, 'If this isn't nice, what is'" If This Isn't Nice, What Is? includes eleven speeches and four pieces of journalism on related themes. Six of the fifteen are new to the second edition--on topics as wide-ranging as why it is that Kurt Vonnegut's dog loves people more than Kurt Vonnegut does, and what it feels like to be the most censored writer in America--and much, much more. In each of these talks and short essays, Vonnegut takes pains to find the few things worth saying and a conversational voice to say them in that's funny and serious and joyful even if sometimes without seeming so.
"Ty - edinstvennoe suschestvo so svobodnoj volej! Kak tebe eto nravitsja?" - eti stroki prochital Duejn Guver v romane pisatelja-fantasta Kilgora Trauta, skvoznogo geroja proizvedenij Vonneguta, javljajuschegosja svoego roda alter ego pisatelja. Guver reshil, chto etot vopros obraschen imenno k nemu (na samom dele vopros i byl prednaznachen dlja ljubogo, kto otkroet knigu) i chto on edinstvennyj na planete chelovek, obladajuschij svobodnoj volej, tolko on mozhet myslit i chuvstvovat, a vse ostalnye ljudi vokrug - tolko bezvolnye i bezdushnye roboty. Eta mysl pochti lishila geroja rassudka. Prodavets avtomobilej, ne otlichajuschijsja osobym intellektom, Duejn Guver neozhidanno okazyvaetsja zamechatelnym provodnikom dlja idej Kilgora Trauta. V etoj udivitelnoj filosofskoj knige, vysmeivajuschej sovremennyj bezumnyj mir, absurdnost i zhestokost chelovecheskikh prostupkov, slivajutsja voedino fantazija i realnost, sumasshestvie i logika, avtor i geroj, nastojaschee i lozhnoe, pravda i vymysel." Zavtrak dlja chempionov" - odna iz glavnykh knig Vonneguta, kotoruju pisatel podaril sebe na pjatidesjatiletie. V 1999 godu roman byl ekranizirovan, rol Duejna Guvera sygral Brjus Uillis.
"Everything was perfectly swell. There were no prisons, no slums, no insane asylums, no cripples, no poverty, no wars. All diseases were conquered. So was old age." So begins '2 B R 0 2 B', a clever short story by Kurt Vonnegut Jr, the author of far more famous works such as Slaughterhouse Five, Cat's Cradle, The Sirens of Titan, Mother Night, and many others. The story first appeared in the January 1962 issue of the pulp sci-fi magazine Worlds of If. Its modest utopian beginnings quickly open up to an underlying dystopia: the only way to maintain the perfect balance on this seemingly perfect far-future Earth is to limit the population to precisely forty million souls. But old age has been beaten. To maintain eternal happiness, should birth control fail, one must acquiesce to either infanticide or suicide - choose your pleasure. Those few adults who decide they want to die are encouraged to call the Federal Bureau of Termination's hotline at 2 B R 0 2 B (pronounced 2 B or naught 2 B) and make an appointment for euthanasia, thus opening the door for the birth of a new human. No one is forced into death, unless you count social pressure, although there is plenty of that in a society where the most admired man on the planet is Dr Hitz, "responsible for setting up the very first gas chamber in Chicago."
