Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy was a Russian author best known for his novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina which are considered to be the greatest novels of realist fiction. Tolstoy is also regarded as worlds best novelist by many. In addition to writing novels, Tolstoy also authored short stories, essays and plays. Also a moral thinker and a social reformer, Tolstoy held severe moralistic views. In later life, he became a fervent Christian anarchist and anarcho-pacifist. His non-violent resistance approach towards life has been expressed in his works such as The Kingdom of God is Within You, which is known to have a profound effect on important 20th century figures, particularly, Martin Luther King Jr. and Mohandas Gand In this anthology the critic August Nemo presents seven short stories that bring the most emblematic elements of the style of this important author: God Sees the Truth, But Waits Papa Panovs Special Christmas, Three Questions Work, Death and Sickness - A Legend How Much Land Does a Man Needs? The Death of Ivan Ilyich and Alyosha the Pot.
Anna Karenina (Royal Collector's Edition) (Case Laminate Hardcover with Jacket)
Anna Karenina is the story of a married aristocrat/socialite and her affair with the affluent Count Vronsky. The story opens when she arrives in the midst of a family broken up by her brother's unbridled womanizing. A bachelor, Vronsky is eager to marry her if she will agree to leave her husband Karenin, a senior government official, but she is vulnerable to the pressures of Russian social norms, the moral laws of the Russian Orthodox Church, her own insecurities, and Karenin's indecision. Widely regarded as a pinnacle in realist fiction, Anna Karenina recounts St. Petersburg aristocrat Anna Karenina's life story at the backdrop of the late-19th-century feudal Russian society. Having considered War and Peace not a novel, Tolstoy considered Anna Karenina his first true novel. Fyodor Dostoyevsky declared it "flawless as a work of art." His opinion was shared by Vladimir Nabokov, who especially admired "the flawless magic of Tolstoy's style," and by William Faulkner, who described the novel as "the best ever written." This case laminate collector's edition includes a Victorian inspired dust-jacket.

War and Peace (Royal Collector's Edition) (Annotated) (Case Laminate Hardcover with Jacket)
War and Peace charts the history of the French invasion of Russia, and the impact of the Napoleonic era on Tsarist society, through the stories of five Russian aristocratic families. War and Peace is well known as being one of the longest novels ever written. Newsweek in 2009 ranked it first in its Top 100 Books. In 2007, Time magazine ranked War and Peace third in its poll of the 10 greatest books of all time. It is regarded as one of the central works of world literature. According to the Encyclop dia Britannica, "no single English novel attains the universality of Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace." Tolstoy was instrumental in bringing a new kind of consciousness to the novel. His narrative structure is noted for its "god-like" ability to hover over and within events, but also in the way it swiftly and seamlessly portrayed a particular character's point of view. His use of visual detail is often cinematic in scope, using the literary equivalents of panning, wide shots and close-ups. These devices are part of the new style of the novel that arose in the mid-19th century and of which Tolstoy proved himself a master.

“One of the greatest love stories in world literature.”-Vladimir Nabokov “Anna Karenina is a perfect work of art. This novel contains a humane message that has not yet been heeded in Europe and that is much needed by the people of the western world.”-Fyodor Dostoevsky “The truth is we are not to take Anna Karenina as a work of art; we are to take it as a piece of life.”-Matthew Arnold Although love and infidelity are a major themes of Leo Tolstoy’s epic Russian novel Anna Karenina (1877), there is a startling scope of philosophical and theological insight within the pages of this monumental work. The pinnacle of the realist novel, the commonplace lives and frustrations of the characters within Anna Karenina are woven together in parallel subtexts that ask difficult questions. The story of the extramarital affair between Anna Karenina and the young bachelor Count Vronsky is at the center of this complex work of literature. When Anna’s husband discovers the infidelity of his wife, his primary concern is not the well-being of his marriage, but his own self-image. The downward spiral of Anna’s illicit behavior is paralleled with the story of Kitty and Konstantin Levin, who is a wealthy agriculturalist but somewhat socially clumsy figure. Levin and Kitty’s love is unblemished, yet his struggles with faith and his unrelenting philosophical questioning paint a profound portrait of internal anguish. This classic novel examines the depth of the human soul against the backdrop of 19th-century Russia as no other work of literature has done. With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Anna Karenina is both modern and readable.

Childhood, Boyhood and Youth (riverrun editions)
'The beautiful illusion, when reading Tolstoy, is that one is looking directly at the world, as opposed to a depiction' Andrew O'Hagan from his preface to Childhood, Boyhood and YouthPublished in 1852, when he was just twenty-four, Childhood was Tolstoy's first published work, and the first of a trilogy of stories that evoke the upbringing and traditional education of a Russian aristocrat in a world that vanished with the revolution. In this self-portrait, narrated by its protagonist Nikólya, the young Tolstoy captured the textures of adolescence with a psychological insight and subtlety of analysis that look forward to his mature achievements; while his matchless objectivity - summoning the smells, sights and sounds of early childhood - is already fully present in these pages. The riverrun edition reissues the translation of Louise and Aylmer Maude, whose influential versions of Tolstoy first brought his work to a wide readership in English.

Tolstoy is considered one of the giants of Russian literature; his works include the novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina and novellas such as Hadji Murad and The Death of Ivan Ilyich. Tolstoy's earliest works, the autobiographical novels Childhood, Boyhood, and Youth (1852-1856), tell of a rich landowner's son and his slow realization of the chasm between himself and his peasants. Though he later rejected them as sentimental, a great deal of Tolstoy's own life is revealed. They retain their relevance as accounts of the universal story of growing up. Tolstoy served as a second lieutenant in an artillery regiment during the Crimean War, recounted in his Sevastopol Sketches. His experiences in battle helped stir his subsequent pacifism and gave him material for realistic depiction of the horrors of war in his later work. His fiction consistently attempts to convey realistically the Russian society in which he lived. The Cossacks (1863) describes the Cossack life and people through a story of a Russian aristocrat in love with a Cossack girl. Anna Karenina (1877) tells parallel stories of an adulterous woman trapped by the conventions and falsities of society and of a philosophical landowner (much like Tolstoy), who works alongside the peasants in the fields and seeks to reform their lives. Tolstoy not only drew from his own life experiences but also created characters in his own image, such as Pierre Bezukhov and Prince Andrei in War and Peace, Levin in Anna Karenina and to some extent, Prince Nekhlyudov in Resurrection. It was initially released in serial installments from 1873 to 1877 in the periodical The Russian Messenger.
