The name originates from Sevastopol, a city in Crimea. In the December tale Tolstoy introduces us to Sevastopol by giving the reader a tour and introducing us to the settings, mannerisms, and background that would relevant in the following tales. In the May tale Tolstoy examines the senselessness of war, musings that would lay the foundation for his much larger work and magnum opus "War and Peace." In the third and final tale the fall of the town is detailed.
"Bethink Yourselves " by Leo Tolstoy (translated by V. Tchertkoff). Published by Good Press. Good Press publishes a wide range of titles that encompasses every genre. So much contention, so much anger, so much violence, and so much war exists in our world. It is easy to get caught up in the negativity of it all, but such a mindset will only further drag us down. In this stirring discourse by Leo Tolstoy, we are reminded of the need for peace. He encourages us to align ourselves with the powers of goodness and kindness rather than the evils of the world. Bethink Yourselves is just as relevant today as when it was first published.
A Confession -- an essay by Leo Tolstoy on his religious thoughts -- shows the great author in process of looking for answers to profound questions that trouble all who take them on: "What will come of my life?" and "What is the meaning of life?" these are questions whose answers were an absolute requirement for Tolstoy. In the course of the essay, Tolstoy shows different attempts to find answers on the examples of science, philosophy, eastern wisdom, and the opinions of his fellow novelists. . . . finding no workable solution in any of these, Tolstoy recognizes the deep religious convictions of ordinary people as containing the key to true answers.

Raised in the Russian Orthodox Church, Tolstoy lost his religion at 18. After a life of debauchery, in his early 50s, he wanted religion - or some source of intellectual security - back. Tolstoy notes that, whatever the faith may be, it "gives to the finite existence of man an infinite meaning, a meaning not destroyed by sufferings, deprivations, or death," and yet he is careful not to conflate faith with a specific religion. Tolstoy believed being a Christian required him to be a pacifist; the apparently inevitable waging of war by governments, is why he is considered a philosophical anarchist.
The moral development of Father Sergius takes place in a society filled with a range of stereotypes, from the highest members to the lowest. The main character is, initially, the stereotype of an ambitious young soldier who has caught the eye of the emperor, whom young Stepan Kasatsky adores for his royal trappings. These include a military overcoat, brisk step, and "sonorous voice." His fianc e is a typical young beauty, "the personification of innocence and love." The abbot of the monastery he joins is a "gentleman by birth, a learned writer" who belongs to "a succession of monks," one in a long line.

The Death of Ivan Ilyich is probably his best-known work after War and Peace - and with good reason. It is one of the most lacerating works of literature ever written, a hard, pitiless stare into the abyss, not just of death, but of human nature. Greed, Purity, and Corruption. Focusing on Ivan Ilyich's careerist worldview and its destructive qualities, The Death of Ivan Ilyich warns against the toxic, soul-corrupting effects of fixating on status, money, and power. Hailed as one of the world's supreme masterpieces on the subject of death and dying, The Death of Ivan Ilyich is the story of a worldly careerist, a high court judge who has never given the inevitability of his dying so much as a passing thought.
