Bethink Yourselves By Leo Tolstoy, Vladimir Chertkov

This collection of four stories by Leo Tolstoy was published in 1885, a few years after his religious conversion to radical non-violent Christianity, and the stories reflect his concerns at that time. Includes "What Men Live By", "The Three Questions", "The Coffee House of Surat", and "How Much Land Does a Man Need?" Tolstoy shows his great ability to describe environments, characters, landscapes, desires, anxieties and takes advantage of any situation to generate a story less enjoyable and give the reader a moral, a lesson and a reflection process associated with ethics and Christian customs. At the time when these stories were written is clear and explicit belief (? Fanaticism?) The author by the teachings of the Catholic religion. further highlights the virtues and flaws and obsessions for which a man must fight in the course of his life. Solidarity towards others, pride, love, ambition, pride, bribery, suffering. Simple yet profound stories that have an impact and can be a cause of a process of reflection. Tolstoy certainly is one of the greatest contemporary writers.

Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (1828-1910) commonly referred to in English as Leo Tolstoy, was a Russian writer - novelist, essayist, dramatist and philosopher - as well as pacifist Christian anarchist and educational reformer. He was the most influential member of the aristocratic Tolstoy family. His first publications were three autobiographical novels, Childhood, Boyhood, and Youth (1852-1856). They tell of a rich landowner's son and his slow realization of the differences between him and his peasants. As a fiction writer Tolstoy is widely regarded as one of the greatest of all novelists, particularly noted for his masterpieces War and Peace (1869) and Anna Karenina (1877). In their scope, breadth and realistic depiction of 19th-century Russian life, the two books stand at the peak of realist fiction. As a moral philosopher Tolstoy was notable for his ideas on nonviolent resistance through works such as The Kingdom of God is Within You (1894).

The story is divided into two parts. In Part I, schoolboy Mitya is in desperate need of money to repay a debt, but his father angrily denies him assistance. Dejected, under the instigation of a friend Makhin, Mitya simply changes a 2.50 rouble bond coupon to read 12.50 roubles, but this one evil deed sets off a chain of events that affects the lives of dozens of others, when his one falsehood indirectly causes a man to murder a woman at the end of Part I, and then seek redemption through religion in Part II. Having written the novella in his dying years, after his excommunication, Tolstoy relishes the chance to unveil the "pseudo-piety and hypocrisy of organized religion." Yet, he maintains an unwavering belief in man's capacity to find truth, so the story remains hopeful, especially in Part II, which shows that good works can affect another as in a domino effect, just as evil does in Part I

Tolstoy's writings give us the inspiration that there must be some purpose of human life, if human beings have a sense of true altruism and human service then their human life becomes meaningful.
