Den unge student Niels Klim beslutter, at undersøge en fjeldhule og lader sig hejse ned i dybet af den. Men rebet knækker, og snart befinder Niels Klim sig i en underjordisk verden. Her rejser han igennem en hel række lande, som alle er indrettet på hver deres særlige måde, f.eks. staten Potu, hvis indbyggere er træer. Her er der ingen opdeling i adel og pøbel; man placeres i stedet efter evne og antallet af grene. De har den opfattelse, at den, der begriber tingene langsomt, må være vis, da en hurtig opfattelse for dem, er lig manglende dømmekraft. Niels Klim bliver derfor regnet for idiot.
