British Second World War tanks performed so badly that it is difficult to bring to mind any other British weapon of the period that provokes such a strong sense of failure. Unfortunately, many of the accusations appear to be true - British tanks were in many ways a disgrace. But why was Britain, the country that invented them, consistently unable to field tanks of the required quality or quantity throughout the conflict? This perceived failure has taken on the status of a myth, but, like all myths, it should not be accepted at face value - it should be questioned and analysed. And that is what Dick Taylor does in this closely researched and absorbing study. He looks at the flaws in British financial policy, tank doctrine, design, production and development before and throughout the war years which often had fatal consequences for the crews who were sent to fight and to be 'murdered' in 'mechanical abortions'. Their direct experience of the shortcomings of these machines is an important element of the story. He also considers how British tanks compared to those of the opposition and contrasts tank production for the army with the production of aircraft for the RAF during the same period. His clear-sighted account goes on to explain how, later in the conflict, British tank design improved to the point where their tanks were in many ways superior to those of the Americans and Germans and how they then produced the Centurion which was one of the best main battle tanks of the post-war era.

Originally published in 1985 this book is a critique and comparison of the nature, structure and provision of university adult education in England and the USA. The focus is both contemporary (twentieth century) and historical and is interdisciplinary, involving both social scientific and historical modes of enquiry and analysis. A central concern of the book is the liberal tradition as it has operated in its different ways and the erosion of this tradition and its consequences for the contemporary structure of university adult education form a large part of the book's discussion.

Girty

Girty

Along with Benedict Arnold, Simon Girty was one of the most hated men in early America. The son of an Irish immigrant, he was raised on the western Pennsylvania frontier but was captured by the Senecas as a teenager and lived among them for several years. This able frontiersman might be seen today as a defender of Native Americans, but in his own time he was branded as a traitor for siding with First Nations and the British during the Revolutionary War. He fought fiercely against Continental Army forces in the Ohio River Valley and was victorious in the bloody Battle of Blue Licks. In this classic work, Richard Taylor artfully assembles a collage of passages from diaries, travel accounts, and biographies to tell part of the notorious villain's story. Taylor uses the voice of Girty himself to unfold the rest of the narrative through a series of interior monologues, which take the form of both prose and poetry. Moments of torture and horrifying bloodshed stand starkly against passages celebrating beautiful landscapes and wildlife. Throughout, Taylor challenges perceptions of the man and the frontier, as well as notions of white settler innocence. Simon Girty's bloody exploits and legend made him hated and feared in Kentucky and the Ohio River Valley, but many who knew him respected him for his convictions, principles, and bravery. This evocative work brings to life a complex figure who must permanently dwell in the borderland between myth and fact, one foot in each domain.

This monograph has arisen out of a number of attempts spanning almost five decades to understand how one might examine the evolution of densities in systems whose dynamics are described by differential delay equations. Though the authors have no definitive solution to the problem, they offer this contribution in an attempt to define the problem as they see it, and to sketch out several obvious attempts that have been suggested to solve the problem and which seem to have failed. They hope that by being available to the general mathematical community, they will inspire others to consider–and hopefully solve–the problem. Serious attempts have been made by all of the authors over the years and they have made reference to these where appropriate.
Footfalls of the Unknown

Footfalls of the Unknown

These poems span many years of a writing habit. For younger days and themes they stumble into the puzzling ironies of existence, the way things are more than they seem, and then less, mysteries beyond their years. At older ages poems often mine again the trim, often innocent insights of one's youth, its enlightening confusions, bringing them into more complex worlds, their secrets and riddles. For age is anything but linear, the additive succession of our days into a future. It is cumulative, forever visiting its pasts and futures, leaping ahead of itself from the very beginning and forever eddying back, charmed and scarred by those early wonders, affections and sorrows, and now grown into sober contemplation of our days so fresh with alarm and quickened wit. At any moment we are all the ages we have ever been, and noticed as well along the way that it takes a lifetime to grow up. Even then we are not quite sure. Poems turn out to be like the dry stones we find in order to cross a stream, and we admit to the whimsical joys and perils of our crossings. But it is as much our own footfalls that we hear within the stream's rush and wakeful quiet, mysteries charged with gratitude and love, reckless and bewildered. We glow with these moments of grace, unbidden and profound, even when a poem begins with a leap and finishes with wet feet. Partly we entice these poems into our company, partly we earn their company with the fever to be unusually alive. Then poems seek us out, circling warily. They don't trust becoming familiar casually. Sometimes they come closer when we turn our backs. We write a little and wait upon language, the singular word or phrase so distinct we know the earth and its human beings have given us their particular say, unknown right up to the instant of its expression. A word separates itself from its crowd, seeks others with whom to make a particular music that takes a measure of the universe, a certain beloved, a time of day, the seasons of our given time. They are true footfalls, and we do well to dance with them.
English Radicalism in the Twentieth Century

English Radicalism in the Twentieth Century

England has had a predominantly conservative political culture for some centuries. Yet there is a persistent, minority strand of radicalism that has challenged the practices, beliefs and structures of power of the established order. This book explores this ‘radical tradition’ as articulated in the twentieth century. The main currents of English radicalism range from liberal reformers, through socialist parliamentarians, to social movement activists in the peace, women’s and labour movements. Despite their differing agendas, all have held their moral and political commitments to achieving a free, democratic, equal and just society in common. Moreover, all have believed, whatever their other differences, in the importance of extra-parliamentary social movements. What is it that has constituted this ‘radical tradition’? Is it a coherent, distinctive and important political force in the twentieth century? And how do these ideas and practices relate to radical politics in England in the early twenty-first century? This book offers an analysis of the historical and ideological development of English radicalism from the English Civil War onwards. Richard Taylor examines how the problems of achieving radical change in England in the twentieth century were approached by the ten key figures from a range of ideological positions within the tradition: Bertrand Russell, Sylvia Pankhurst, Ellen Wilkinson, George Orwell, E. P. Thompson, Michael Foot, Joan Maynard, Stuart Hall, Tony Benn and Nicolas Walter.

THE CULT OF HORN detailed my second go-round with the subcontinent and confirmed that India's chaotic urban centres, in an advanced and permanent state of rush hour, rendered most of the planet's cities stunted, somnolent mining towns, their silver veins long tapped out. EAST INFECTION picks up where CULT left off, tracing a run through the teeming humanity of Calcutta and Dhaka, then Bangkok, Yangon and the road to Mandalay. Due to civic ructions, I left Bangladesh prematurely, despite a welcoming people who aided me at every fork and turn. Bangkok, seventeen years after my first visit, was seemingly reborn and along with Myanmar reaffirmed an affinity for Southeast Asia, due not only to the charms and fascinations of the region but my appreciation for a people who tended to mind their business while respecting mine. As the new book title suggests, internal as well as external forces were at play throughout the journey but I hope (once again) that the photographs serve as a tonic to any surly eruptions on my part.

Two Discourses on the Divinity of Christ; and on the Union of the Divine and the Human Natures, in his Person. By Richard Taylor, M.A
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title.
