In "Spiritual Writings", renowned Oxford theologian George Pattison presents previously neglected Christian writings that will forever alter our understanding of the great philosopher Soren Kierkegaard. In fact, Pattison argues that the Kierkegaard known to the history of modern ideas is, in an important sense, not Kierkegaard at all. In philosophy and literature Kierkegaard is perceived as epitomizing existential angst, whilst in theology he is seen as expounding a radical form of Christianity based on a paradoxical and absurd faith that demands hatred of the world and the rejection of all forms of communal religion. However, both pictures rely on highly debatable interpretations of a relatively small selection of texts; there is much more to Kierkegaard than the image of the 'melancholy Dane' or the iconoclastic critic of established Christendom might suggest. Alongside the pseudonymous works for which he is best known - and which do indeed deal with such concepts as melancholy, anxiety, 'fear and trembling', paradox, the absurd, and despair - Kierkegaard also wrote many religious works, usually in the form of addresses, which he called 'upbuilding discourses' (which might, in English, be called 'devotional talks'). Taken as a whole, these writings offer something very different from the popular view. As "Spiritual Writings" shows, they embody a spirituality grounded in a firm sense of human life as a good gift of God. Kierkegaard calls on us to love God and, in loving God, to love life-quite concretely - and to love our own lives, even when they have become wretched or despairing.

"By far the most profound thinker of the 19th century."-- Ludwig Wittgenstein The Present Age is the stunningly prescient essay on the rise of mass media--particularly advertising, marketing, and publicity--by the great philosopher S ren Kierkegaard, the "father of existentialism." With an introduction from celebrated philosopher Walter Kaufmann--who states "those who would know Kierkegaard can do no better than to begin with this book"--The Present Age is an ideal introduction to one of the greatest thinkers in the history of western philosophy.

'The love of repetition is in truth the only happy love' So says Constantine Constantius on the first page of Kierkegaard's Repetition. Life itself, according to Kierkegaard's pseudonymous narrator, is a repetition, and in the course of this witty, playful work Constantius explores the nature of love and happiness, the passing of time and the importance of moving forward (and backward). The ironically entitled Philosophical Crumbs pursues the investigation of faith and love and their tense relationship with reason. Written only a year apart, these two works complement each other and give the reader a unique insight into the breadth and substance of Kierkegaard's thought. The first reads like a novel and the second like a Platonic dialogue, but both engage, in different ways, the same challenging issues. These are the first translations to convey the literary quality and philosophical precision of the originals. They were not intended, however, for philosophers, but for anyone who feels drawn to the question of the ultimate truth of human existence and the source of human happiness. One of Kierkegaard's central writings, "Works of Love" is a profound and indispensable examination of the human heart. 'Deep within every man', Kierkegaard writes, 'there lies the dread of being alone in the world, forgotten by God, overlooked among the household of millions upon millions'. Love, for Kierkegaard, is one of the central aspects of existence; it saves us from isolation and unites us to each other and God. This new edition of "Works of Love" features an original introduction by Oxford theologian George Pattison.

The Danish philosopher's unpreached sermon, directed toward the solitary individual preparing for confession discusses remorse, repentance, and the barriers to willing one thing

Influencing philosophers such as Sartre and Camus, and still strikingly modern in its psychological insights, Kierkegaard’s The Sickness Unto Death explores the concept of ‘despair’ as a symptom of the human condition and describes man’s struggle to fill the spiritual void. Throughout history, some books have changed the world. They have transformed the way we see ourselves – and each other. They have inspired debate, dissent, war and revolution. They have enlightened, outraged, provoked and comforted. They have enriched lives – and destroyed them. Now Penguin brings you the works of the great thinkers, pioneers, radicals and visionaries whose ideas shook civilization and helped make us who we are.

The nineteenth-century Danish philosopher offers a challenging approach to the Christian faith and calls for living out the implications of Christianity in every aspect of life, explaining how to develop one's personal integrity in accordance with the truths of revealed religion and basing his call to faith on a reflection of what it means to be human, Christ as the model of perfection, and loving God with one's whole mind and heart.
