This is a book of the withdrawal of General Lee's army from Gettysburg, and the pursuit by General Meade. Clausewitz said that possible engagements are to be regarded as real ones because of their consequences. Trapped by the flooding Potomac, Lee offered an engagement to Meade at Falling Waters, but because Meade refused the engagement, Lee was able to safely cross the Potomac with his army and return to Virginia. This book analyzes the decisions made by key leaders on both sides and what factors and information were present upon which to base those decisions. The focus ranges from the strategic level to the operational and tactical level.
Civilian Contractors on the Battlefield: A Partnership with Commercial Industry of Recipe for Failure?
The U. S. Military is becoming increasingly dependent upon civilian commercial contractors to provide logistical support on the battlefield. Despite the current military philosophy on outsourcing, the increasing dependence of our war fighters on this support, the emphasis on partnership with the commercial industry, the Army and Joint Vision statements which stress "Focused Logistics" and "On Time Delivery", and the demands for multinational and host nation logistics support, these concepts and the use of civilians on the Battlefield remain highly volatile issues.. Little definitive policy guidance and training are provided. Commanders' and war fighter's attitudes and training remain entrenched in the" Iron Mountain" paradigm. Contractor loyalty to the "almighty dollar" as opposed to support for/of the front-line soldier remains serious questions which will be difficult to test in a non-warfare environment. Budgetary constraints as well as technological advances will continue to drive policy in this direction and put pressure on the Logistics community to provide the necessary support. However, can we depend on paid contractors to meet the demands and face the stresses that our current military and non-contractor logicians face? Failure in this area is not an option. Our American fighting forces require, deserve, and must have the best support to defeat any prospective enemy on any battlefield. This book will endeavor to address these issues and proposed solutions for ensuring the support necessary to help our soldiers maintain, survive, and win on the modem battlefield.

The Amazon region is considered a strategic area thanks its geographic characteristics, wealth and potential threats. The Brazilian national defense policy, issued in 1996, the first in the history of the country, established directives to orient the Brazilian military strategic planning as well as diplomatic positions concerning international security. Moreover, this document introduced the concept of sustainable defense that relates the security of the State with the well being of society. This new concept points out that defense, even based on military means; requires participation of society as a whole. This project describes the main aspects that influence the elaboration process of defense policy at international and Brazilian State levels. It also describes the problems of the Amazon as well as the coordinated, integrated and harmonic actions of Brazilian military, diplomatic, scientific people in general that are taking place throughout the country to assure that Brazil has an effective and sustainable defense capability of the Amazon area, within a concept of a continent of peace.

Since the end of World War II, the United States has made maintaining a favorable balance of power in Eurasia a core element of its national security strategy. It did so in good measure by maintaining a large conventional military force that was based not only at home, but also in bases spread across Europe and Asia. That strategy was buttressed by developing security ties and alliances with key powers and front-line states. The implicit bargain was that the United States would help keep the peace on their door front if they would provide access from which American forces could operate and, in turn, maintain credible forces themselves to reinforce and support U. S. efforts at keeping the great power peace.
