Children in Immigrant Families in Eight Affluent Countries

Children in Immigrant Families in Eight Affluent Countries

United Nations

UNICEF Innocenti Research Centre
2009
nidottu
Among the critical knowledge gaps concerning children is a lack of systematic and validated evidence on the situation of children who have migrated with their parents. While this gap exists for virtually all countries, it is particularly striking for industrialised countries where data on children and families is otherwise generally complete. This Innocenti Research Centre (IRC) study presents internationally comparable statistics on the family contexts in industrialised countries in which different groups of immigrant and native children live. It is intended to promote a greater understanding of the situation of these children and the barriers to inclusion they may face, and to make policy recommendations. The research is complemented by a review of literature on the experiences of immigrant children outside the home: their access to social services, vulnerability, situations of conflict with the law, and inclusion and socialization in resident societies. Sources of information include national censuses and surveys.
Current Practices in Electronic Surveillance in the Investigation of Serious and Organized Crime
The value of employing electronic surveillance in the investigation of some forms of serious crime is unquestionable. It allows the gathering of information unattainable through other means. This document aims to assist legislative drafters, policymakers, legal practitioners, law enforcement and other investigative authorities involved in or considering electronic evidence gathering. It hopes to provide a comprehensive outline of measures and options which may be considered for incorporation into respective legal systems and operational procedures subject to the particular social, political and economic circumstances of their countries.
Transboundary Flood Risk Management

Transboundary Flood Risk Management

nidottu
Floods are natural phenomena that are necessary for the survival and health of the eco-system. Floodplains have historically attracted socio-economic development and continue to support high densities of human population. This is particularly important where land resources suitable for human development are scarce. Especially in arid and semi-arid areas, flood waters represent a vital water resource. Floods can, however, also lead to wide-spread damage, health problems and the loss of human life. Transboundary flood risk management enables sharing and redistributing risks and resources. This publication is based on the practical experience from 10 river basins in the UNECE region, and gives analysis of situations, problems, challenges, and possible solutions.

Tracking Progress on Child and Maternal Nutrition
This report offers a rationale for urgently scaling up effective interventions to reduce the global burden of child and maternal undernutrition. It provides information on nutrition strategies and progress made by programmes, based on the most recent data available. The success stories and lessons leaned that are described in the publication demonstrate that reducing undernutrition is entirely feasible. The report presents detailed, up-to-date information on nutritional status, programme implementation and related indicators for the 24 countries where 80 per cent of the world’s stunted children live. nidottu
The publication was developed by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in response to the request of the General Assembly to the Secretary-General to promote and assist the efforts of member states to become party to and implement the United Nations Convention against transnational organized crime and the protocols thereto. It was developed in particular to assist States in implementing the provisions contained in the protocol to prevent, suppress and punish yrafficking in persons, especially women and children, supplementing that Convention. The Model Law will both facilitate and help systematize provision of legislative assistance by UNODC as well as facilitate review and amendment of existing legislation and adoption of new legislation by states themselves. It is designed to be adaptable to the needs of each state, whatever its legal tradition and social, economic, cultural and geographical conditions.
Annual Review of Developments in Globalisation and Regional Integration in the Arab Countries
This annual publication reviews the progress made by Arab countries towards regional integration and their integration into the world economy. It provides an analysis of economic indicators which measure the performance of the Arab economies in achieving integration into the world economy, with an emphasis on foreign direct investment. It also gives an analysis of a set of other economic indicators which measure the performance of Arab countries in achieving regional integration. The review discusses, in a separate chapter, labour migration, as one of the regional integration indicators. It considers the status of labour movement in the Arab region and the workers’ remittances and their impact on the economies of their countries of origin. The review presents a set of recommendations on how to remove obstacles that hinder the Arab regional integration and the Arab economies’ integration into global economy.
Guidelines for a Voluntary Code of Practice for the Chemical Industry
These guidelines provide guidance to national authorities that have implemented mandatory controls but wish to establish a broaderbased and more comprehensive approach to chemical control in order to respond rapidly and flexibly to changes in local and regional illicit drug manufacturing activities. The text is intended to assist authorities in the development of a code of practice with the national chemical industry as a supplement to existing national legislation in line with the spirit of article 12 of the 1988 Convention. Such cooperative and voluntary efforts with the industrial sector are a key component of effective national and regional chemical control programmes and offer an effective means of monitoring precursor chemicals without impeding access by legitimate users.
Guidance for the Validation of Analytical Methodology and Calibration of Equipment used for Testing of Illicit Drugs in Seized Materials and Biological Specimens
The validation of analytical methods and the calibration of equipment are important aspects of quality assurance in the labouratory. This manual deals with both of these within the context of testing of illicit drugs in seized materials and biological specimens. It provides an introduction and practical guidance to national authorities and analysts in the implementation of method validation and verification, and also in the calibration/performance verification of labouratory instrumentation and equipment within their existing internal quality assurance programmes. The procedures described represent a synthesis of the experience of scientists from several reputable laboratories around the world.
