THE WOMAN IN WHITE: - is a novel by Wilkie Collins. Published initially in a serial form under the title of All the Year Round, this novel was turned into book form in 1860. Highly appreciated for its plot and characterization, the novel brought Collins great name and fame. A decade later, he made it into a play. Inspired by an actual criminal case, this dramatic tale is told through multiple narrators. Widely considered as one of the earliest examples of crime fiction, this is the story of what a woman's patience can endure, and what a man's resolution can achieve. A long but very rewarding book, the Woman in White is densely plotted with a memorable cast of characters. The novel begins with Walter Hartright's encounter with The Woman in White on a moonlit London road. Soon, Walter is embroiled in the sinister intrigues of Sir Percival Glyde and his friend Count Fosco who is cunning, intelligent and extremely evil. He is also portrayed as a fascinating and dangerous villain, turning this novel as a blend of Gothic horror and psychological thriller. In short, it is a dark and chilling tale that readers will enjoy to the hilt.

Iris Henley, who hails from a respectable family but not one of nobility, is pressured by her father to wed Hugh Mountjoy, a well-respected and affluent man. Hugh is better suited to a lady of character, like Iris, but she can't help but be drawn to Lord Harry Norland, who has had a famous life. Lord Harry's close friend Hugh Mountjoy was murdered by a member of the Invincibles, and as retaliation, he turned himself into a marked man. Iris, his wife, received no financial assistance from her father, but she did have access to a little legacy from her mother, which she utilized to supplement her income. Lord Harry allowed himself to be seduced by a con artist and persuaded Iris to assist him in covering up for him when an investment he made with the majority of Iris' estate turned bad. There are a lot of regrets shown by many characters who are persuaded to take a terrible path but who finally rebel against their circumstances to make apologies, much like in real life, not everyone is all good or all bad. An excellent analysis of how even decent people may succumb to evil when they believe they have nowhere else to turn that is really well done.
The stage drama and book No Thoroughfare, by Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins, were both published in December 1867. No Thoroughfare: A Drama: In Five Acts was a theatre drama written in 1867 by Charles Dickens and Wilkie Collins. Previously, the two had worked together on the play The Frozen Deep. Dickens' final stage production was this one; he passed away in June 1870. On December 26, 1867, the drama had its premiere at the Adelphi Theatre. The first edition of Dickens' book No Thoroughfare appeared in the Christmas issue of his magazine All the Year Round in 1867. Other books from Dickens's mature writings, like Little Dorrit (1857) and Our Mutual Friend, have similar themes to this one (1865). An early instance of commercial merchandising, the story's publication in All The Year Round promoted both the play to those who had read the book and the story to those who were aware of the theatrical production. The book's chapters, which are referred to as "acts," correspond to the scenes in the play. The narrative includes skillfully worded descriptions, diverse and well-drawn people, unsettling and exotic settings, mystery, partially revealed identities, near-death experiences, romance, and the ultimate triumph of Good over Evil.
The New Magdalen has been regarded as significant work throughout human history, and in order to ensure that this work is never lost, we have taken steps to ensure its preservation by republishing this book in a contemporary format for both current and future generations. This entire book has been retyped, redesigned, and reformatted. Since these books are not made from scanned copies, the text is readable and clear.

Valeria Brinton marries Eustace Woodville despite objections from Woodville's family. Just a few days after the wedding, various incidents lead Valeria to suspect her husband of hiding a dark secret in his past. She discovers that he has been using a false name, "Woodville," when his true surname is "Macallan." Eustace refuses to discuss it, leading them to curtail their honeymoon and return to London where Valeria learns that he was on trial for his first wife's murder. Valeria sets out to save their happiness by proving her husband innocent of the crime. Wilkie Collins wrote penetratingly on the plight of women and on the social and domestic issues of his time. An instrumental event in his career was an introduction in March 1851 to Charles Dickens by a mutual friend, the painter Augustus Egg. They became lifelong friends and collaborators. In May of that year, Collins acted with Dickens in Edward Bulwer-Lytton's play Not So Bad As We Seem. Among the audience were Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. This case laminate collector's edition includes a Victorian-inspired dust jacket.
