From the deep woods to civilization; chapters in the autobiography of an Indian. By: Charles A . Eastman
Charles Alexander Eastman (born Hakadah and later named Oh ye S'a; February 19, 1858 - January 8, 1939) was a Santee Dakota physician educated at Boston University, writer, national lecturer, and reformer. In the early 20th century, he was "one of the most prolific authors and speakers on Sioux ethnohistory and American Indian affairs." 1] Eastman was of Santee Dakota, English and French ancestry. After working as a physician on reservations in South Dakota, he became increasingly active in politics and issues on Native American rights, he worked to improve the lives of youths, and founded thirty-two Native American chapters of the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA). He also helped found the Boy Scouts of America. He is considered the first Native American author to write American history from the Native American point of view.

Eastman was named Hakadah at his birth in Minnesota; his name meant "pitiful last" in Dakota. Eastman was so named because his mother died following his birth. He was the last of five children of Wakantakawin, a mixed-race woman also known as Winona (meaning "First-Born Daughter" in the Dakota language) or Mary Nancy Eastman. 1] She and Eastman's father, a Santee Dakota named Wak-anhdi Ota (Many Lightnings), lived on a Santee Dakota reservation near Redwood Falls, Minnesota.

Red Hunters And the Animal People is a collection of charming Native American stories about animals that were written by Indian accounts largely, perhaps, for a certain quality differentiating them from others of their class. Many current stories of bird and beast show a wider knowledge of animals than do these under consideration. In this collection, however, there is expressed a feeling of camaraderie between the author and the subjects of the tales, a kinship between man and the animal world, which is not expressed elsewhere. Contents: The great cat's nursery -- On Wolf Mountain -- The dance of the little people -- Wechah the provider -- The mustering of the herds -- The sky warrior -- A founder of ten towns -- The gray chieftain -- Hootay of the Little Rosebud -- The river people -- The challenge -- Wild animals from the Indian stand-point -- Glossary of Indian words and phrases.

Indian Heroes and Great Chieftains is a classic Native American history text by Charles A. Eastman. EVERY age, every race, has its leaders and heroes. There were over sixty distinct tribes of Indians on this continent, each of which boasted its notable Indian chiefs. The names and deeds of some of these men will live in American history, yet in the true sense they are unknown, because misunderstood. I should like to present some of the greatest chiefs of modern times in the light of the native character and ideals, believing that the American people will gladly do them tardy justice.

""From The Deep Woods To Civilization"" is a memoir written by Charles A. Eastman, a Native American who was born and raised in the deep woods of Minnesota in the mid-19th century. The book chronicles Eastman's life, from his early childhood spent with his family in the wilderness, to his education at a mission school, and ultimately to his assimilation into white American culture. Throughout the book, Eastman reflects on the challenges he faced as a Native American trying to navigate the complex and often hostile world of white American society. He discusses his experiences with racism, discrimination, and cultural assimilation, as well as the ways in which he tried to reconcile his Native American heritage with his new life in the modern world. ""From The Deep Woods To Civilization"" is a powerful and insightful account of one man's journey from a traditional Native American upbringing to a life in mainstream American society. It offers a unique perspective on the complex history of Native American assimilation and the ongoing struggles faced by indigenous communities in the United States today.
