Moving, political and unafraid, Queer Plays Volume One brings together eight vital works by Scottish playwrights whose voices have helped shape—and challenge—contemporary theatre. Spanning 50 years of queer Scottish theatre, styles and theatrical forms, these plays explore identity, desire, family, faith, friendship, politics, memory and belonging with wit, urgency and heart. From intimate acts of self-revelation to sharp comedy, mythic reinvention and queer resistance, this anthology captures the richness and range of LGBTQ+ Scottish drama. Published with the support of the Scottish Society of Playwrights, this landmark collection is a celebration of queer lives on stage. Foreword by Alan Cumming. On the eve of her 35th birthday, Bayley is forced to confront a myth that has haunted trans women for generations: the idea that they may not live beyond 35. Created with acclaimed playwright and performer Jo Clifford, Thirty-Six is a fierce, funny and tender solo show about mortality, survival, transition, grief and chosen family. Moving between confession, celebration, remembrance and resistance, the play asks what it means to live in a world that too often denies trans people the simple, radical possibility of growing older. Deeply personal and boldly political, Thirty-Six is a moving work of contemporary queer theatre about learning from the dead, fighting for the living, and imagining a future in which trans lives are not only mourned, but cherished, honoured and allowed to flourish.
