The Management of a Student Research Project

The Management of a Student Research Project

Gower Publishing Ltd

The third edition of this popular book has been extensively revised to reflect the changes that have affected student research in higher education in recent years. The ability to carry out research successfully has come to be seen as a 'key transferable skill' required of all higher education students - and The Management of a Student Research Project addresses directly the skill element of this. Furthermore the research process, at all levels, is far more systematized than in the past. The single largest change since the second edition came out in 1996 has been the impact of the World Wide Web on student research. The third edition has been thoroughly rewritten and developed in response to this. In particular, Chapter 4, 'Literature Searching', has been structured around a sample online search. Throughout, the comments and thoughts of readers of previous editions have been taken into account in framing this third edition. Its aims remain the same - to provide a clear, comprehensive and useful guide to students undertaking research projects in order to improve their chances of a successful outcome.

Joseph Conrad and the Narration of Silence investigates how Conrad’s narrators speak without speaking, focusing first on what is unsayable and then on what is unsaid. Silences (both literal and metaphorical) occur throughout Conrad’s writings, and all connect in a meaningful manner to the speech of Conrad’s narrators. Readers have frequently commended Conrad’s distinct narrative style. These commentaries on narrative have made many valuable contributions. However, this book considers what happens when Conrad’s narrators do not narrate – when they are instead silent. In these gaps between what is said and what is unsaid, meaning may emerge. In short, the absence of speaking brings about meaningful moments of narrative memory when one discovers what cannot be contained within the narrator’s narrative alone: An incremental progression toward questions concerning the nature of knowledge, the nature of human existence, and the nature of the universe.

"What rain?" "Can we have pizza again?" Jobs with Inequality

Jobs with Inequality

Income inequality has skyrocketed in Canada over the past few decades. The rich have become richer, while the average household income has deteriorated and job quality has plummeted. Common explanations for these trends point to globalization, technology, or other forces largely beyond our control. But, as Jobs with Inequality shows, there is nothing inevitable about inequality. Rather, runaway inequality is the result of politics and policies - what governments have done to aid the rich and boost finance and what they have not done to uphold the interests of workers. Drawing on new tax and income data, John Peters tells the story of how inequality is unfolding in Canada today by examining post-democracy, financialization, and labour market deregulation. Timely and novel, Jobs with Inequality explains how and why business and government have rewritten the rules of the economy to the advantage of the few, and considers why progressive efforts to reverse these trends have so regularly run aground.

Elation turns to fear as the young doctor steps into the rundown clinic sixty years ago. He is twenty-six years old, a graduate of Northwestern University in Chicago with its hordes of specialists and well-equipped hospitals. On a whim, he decides to begin his medical career at a small remote town in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. As he opens the door to the clinic, reality strikes-he is alone. All the helpful specialists are in a hospital 125 miles away. He, with his limited skills and experience, is the only thing standing between life and death for the severely injured and critically ill. But he has an edge. He is a pilot. A plane becomes an integral part of his practice. He makes house calls at remote ranches. He lands on makeshift runways (dirt roads and two-lane blacktops) at accident scenes, at times in the dead of night with only a highway patrolman's car headlights to guide him. He delivers babies and performs emergency surgery in midflight with only Sam, his fellow pilot, or his plane's autopilot as his assistant. His patients become his "family"-honest to a fault, tough beyond reason, and, at times, hysterically funny without trying to be. For the ride of your life, come fly with him back in time to an era where the Wild West was still wild, where cowboys and miners settled their disputes with fists, broken beer bottles, and six-guns. Where life was simpler. Where doing what was right was more important than doing what was politically correct. Where just being alive was a great adventure.

"Accompany Johnny, a young single adult male and his mates, living in a north of England industrial town as they barn-storm their way through situations which impact upon their lives without regard for those that they encounter in the late 1960's. Read about their escapades as they display a cocky attitude to everyone and behave in an illegal, violent and rude manner which cumulates in betrayal and near tragedy. This book will strike a chord with those who are familiar and may have participated in the heady, rebellious and exciting times of that unforgettable period which were the sixties!"
The Universal Obligation to Christian Charity. A Sermon Preach'd at Bow-church, on the Second of March, 1723. Before the ... Society of Antient Britons; ... By John Peters,
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. About the authorJohn Peters is Rector of St Mary, Bryanston Square, an Anglican church in central London. St Mary's has planted several churches in the UK and abroad with similar vision and values. It could be argued that the West is in the process of growing out of Christianity. But is it really Christianity that people are rejecting, or what they have assumed about, or experienced, of the Church? John Peters argues that we desperately need to re-imagine the way we live and do church for the sake of an alienated culture. But that will involve radical change. Are we ready for this? How can we see the power of the Gospel go out into the marketplaces of our society so that people's lives are transformed? Message: Send takes a fresh look at what it means to communicate the message of hope to a post-truth culture, in the power of the Spirit, keeping our focus on the essential truths of the Gospel. About the author: John is the Rector of St Mary, Bryanston Square, an Anglican church in central London. Over the years the church has grown as John and others have sought to communicate the Gospel in a culturally relevant way. St Mary's has also planted several churches in the UK and abroad with similar vision and values.
Worcestershire's War

This is the story of Worcestershire’s First World War. Using letters, diaries and journals made at the time, the book draws together the vast array of experiences from Worcestershire locals to build up a comprehensive picture of how the county experienced the war. It explores among other things the role of Worcestershire’s women in wartime, the local regiment fighting in the Middle East and Worcestershire’s huge impact on the development of the medical profession during this period. The First World War was not just about the Tommy fighting in the trenches – some had a very different experience. Arthur Pepper was a pilot before being shot down and becoming a prisoner of war, and his story is told, along with those of a Navy rating, an Army chaplain and a conscientious objector. The Home Front and everyday life is also considered, with the hardships of food production and the Women’s Land Army. This remarkable collection of voices gives a unique insight into this county’s First World War.

Will current strategic planning give the United States the sort of military capabilities that are needed to counter threats likely to occur in the future? Using first-hand experience at the Pentagon and an army background, Lieutenant Colonel Peters outlines serious problems, offers fresh insights into the defense planning process, and makes suggestions for developing an optimal force structure for the year 2000. This analysis utilizes case studies of the Gulf War, departing from recent studies about military reform. Policymakers, experts in political and military strategy, and political scientists interested in the inner workings of government agencies will find this study a provocative one. Peters assesses the global security environment in this post-Cold War era and defines the risks and consequences likely to confront us. Employing the lens of organizational theory, he points to disjunctures between military and political policies and dysfunctional practices in the Defense Department. He describes the basic components in a force structure that would make the nation more secure militarily by the turn of the century.
