Kobayashi ISSA (1763-1828) followed Yosa BUSON, who followed Matsuo BASHO: the three greatest Japanese haiku poets. This book is the third in the series of 3 handsome presentation hardcovers from the Buddhist Society, which share a key common feature: all the English translations are rendered in the same metric rhythm of 5 then 7 then 5 syllables. The poems are printed on fine paper in Japanese orthography, also romanised with an English translation. Original drawings and calligraphy by Issa complement the book.

This essential book covers the key areas for A Level Film Studies students, building confidence through a careful, step-by-step approach. The first part of the book establishes a basic understanding of the grounding of film analysis in the various elements of film construction, mise en scène, cinematography, editing, sound and performance, developing the knowledge students have of movies whilst challenging them to consider new films and ideas. Key theoretical approaches around narrative, genre, representation, spectatorship and authorship are introduced in Part II, before we consider specific national cinemas from around the world in parts III and IV. In Part V, the book assesses a range of slightly different film experiences, looking at silent cinema, experimental films and documentaries; before, finally, Part VI shifts to evaluating creative approaches to students’ own filmmaking. Specifically designed to be user-friendly, the book has an easy-to-follow design, includes more than 60 colour images and is packed with features such as:case studies on a range of films and filmmakers; activities on such films as Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (Murnau, 1927, USA), Vertigo (Hitchcock, 1958, USA), Do the Right Thing (Lee, 1989, USA), We Need to Talk About Kevin (Ramsay, 2011, UK) and Stories We Tell (Polley, 2012, Canada);definitions of key terms; and suggestions for further reading and website resources. Other Worlds, Other Universes: Playing The Reality Game is a stimulating selection of consciousness expanding topics which include The Search For Extraterrestrial Life; Other Civilizations: The Prehistory Of Earth; Other Lifeforms: A Look At UFOs; Other Dimensions: The Astral Plane and Beyond; and Other Universes and Return to Godhead. The introduction begins: "This book is an attempt to expand your consciousness by playing The Reality Game. The term originates with Brad Steiger in his book Mysteries of Time and Space, where he suggests that humanity has been challenged to participate in a kind of cosmic contest--The Reality Game. The objective is to know reality, to understand ourselves and the cosmos as fully as possible. If man can apprehend the true significance of certain clues; if he can master the proper moves, he may obtain a clearer picture of his true role in the cosmic scheme of things--a role that is decidedly different from what common sense tells him it is." Contributors include Timothy Leary, who while serving time in a California prison for experimenting with psychedelics, donated an essay from his book, Terra II ... A Way Out. Astrophysicist Jacques Vallee contributed a chapter from Passport to Magonia, his classic book on UFOs and folklore. Other writers include Rudolf Steiner, Yogi Ramacharaka and D. Scott Rogo. Kirkus Reviews called it "A bit of this, a pinch of that, toads' eyes and bat brains," making it a must-read for anyone on the metaphysical truth trail.

"Who is this chap White? And what does he do?" This was the question asked by the senior partner of a stockbroking firm after John, a member of staff, was awarded a record number of prizes for examination successes by the Council of the London Stock Exchange. John came from a family of limited means. His schooling ended at age twelve, when the 1939-45 war broke out. Not wishing to remain idle, he built up a profitable business collecting and selling horse manure while also working for a local trader delivering bread. At fourteen he began work in a stockbroker's office. He was determined not to suffer the fate of his father, a poorly paid counter-hand in a local grocer's. After two years as a messenger boy, he was promoted to junior clerk, and given a pen, a nib, a sheet of blotting paper, and a small bottle of ink. Aged eighteen, having gained experience in all departments, he left with the words, "You know, White, you've been very lucky to have gained that position" ringing in his ears. Later, in the Army, he was promoted to the rank of staff sergeant within a year or so of being conscripted. On his discharge he returned to his previous employers and was made number three on an important dealing desk. Within a short time the number two retired and he was promoted, thereafter sharing responsibilities with his colleague. Helped by his new wife, Daphne, a lecturer at London University, he undertook endless studies and examinations, which led to a senior position with a leading merchant bank. He was subsequently head-hunted and joined a rival firm. Later, he branched out on his own as an investment manager. On reaching sixty he decided on a change of employment. After gaining the necessary qualifications, he coached business people and tennis players for twenty years before retiring. This is John's story.

The September 11th attacks in 2001 and the subsequent 'War on Terror' have had a profound effect on American cinema, and the contemporary Western is no exception. In this book, John White explores how films such as Open Range, True Grit and Jane Got a Gun reinforce a conservative myth of America exceptionalism; endorsing the use of extreme force in dealing with enemies and highlighting the importance of defending the homeland. Placing their characters within a dark world of confusion and horror, these films reflect the United States' post-9/11 uncertainties, and the conflict between civilised values and the brutality employed to defend them.

Matsuo Basho (1644-1694) is widely acknowledged as the greatest of all the Japanese haiku poets. In the original Japanese, the two defining features of the haiku form are its 5-7-5 sound unit format (the syllable being the corresponding unit in English) and its rhythm. This selection of three hundred of Basho's finest haiku represents the first successful strict translation into English haiku of what was actually written, some 350 years ago, by a genius of the form. The renditions are beautiful; the crucial cadences are retained.

At a time when our knowledge and understanding of health and safety at work is at its highest, statistics show that ongoing improvements in accident rates and time taken off work due to injury and ill-health are stagnating. Alongside the fact that around 80% of accidents can be attributed to human error, there is also increasing concern that modern-world issues of men-tal and physical wellbeing are undermining recent gains made ensuring the safety of people at work. By applying the principles of marginal gain and using lessons drawn from the high-risk world of outdoor adventure and high level sport, this book provides a variety of practical solutions and seeks to reduce the incidence of human error in the workplace and the number of accidents and near-misses. The concept of Free Thinking Hazard Identification is introduced alongside the importance of managing changing circumstances and minimising the frequently underes-timated risk to experienced workers. A range of practical recommendations are also made to help reduce time taken off work due to injury or ill-health, through managing fitness, diet and health and paying attention to mental wellbeing. The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The eighteenth-century fascination with Greek and Roman antiquity followed the systematic excavation of the ruins at Pompeii and Herculaneum in southern Italy; and after 1750 a neoclassical style dominated all artistic fields. The titles here trace developments in mostly English-language works on painting, sculpture, architecture, music, theater, and other disciplines. Instructional works on musical instruments, catalogs of art objects, comic operas, and more are also included. ++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title. Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson laid the foundations for today's political debates between Democrats and Republicans. Hamilton believed that freedom must be married with a strong central government and especially an energetic president, while Jefferson believed freedom derived from local civic virtues. Throughout history, Democrats and Republicans have chosen sides in this eternal debate—and sometimes even changed sides. Today, those debates have become sharper and more polarized, as the two parties square off on major issues such as healthcare, taxes, regulation, the role of the federal government, and what discretion should be given to local authorities. The debate can be loud and shrill, even as the public yearns for some accommodation between these two schools of thought. People may generally desire an active government to deal with acute problems, but localism still has widespread appeal, and political dysfunction often results when these outcomes are presented as polar opposites and elections are reduced to zero sum contests. Social media adds to the polarization, as Americans gravitate to websites that often ratify their preexisting points of view. The parties struggle to function in this environment as they try to adapt to the political realities of the social media age and the Trump era.
