Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson laid the foundations for today's political debates between Democrats and Republicans. Hamilton believed that freedom must be married with a strong central government and especially an energetic president, while Jefferson believed freedom derived from local civic virtues. Throughout history, Democrats and Republicans have chosen sides in this eternal debate—and sometimes even changed sides. Today, those debates have become sharper and more polarized, as the two parties square off on major issues such as healthcare, taxes, regulation, the role of the federal government, and what discretion should be given to local authorities. The debate can be loud and shrill, even as the public yearns for some accommodation between these two schools of thought. People may generally desire an active government to deal with acute problems, but localism still has widespread appeal, and political dysfunction often results when these outcomes are presented as polar opposites and elections are reduced to zero sum contests. Social media adds to the polarization, as Americans gravitate to websites that often ratify their preexisting points of view. The parties struggle to function in this environment as they try to adapt to the political realities of the social media age and the Trump era.

European art cinema includes some of the most famous films in cinema history. It is elite filmmaking that stands in direct opposition to popular cinema; and yet, it also has an intimate relationship with Hollywood. This guidebook sketches successive phases of art cinema in Europe from its early beginnings of putting Shakespeare’s plays on the screen, through movements such as Expressionism and Surrealism, to the New Waves of the 1960s and more recent incarnations like Dogme 95. Using film examples, John White examines basic critical approaches to art cinema such as semiotics and auteur theory, as well as addressing recurring themes and ideas such as existentialism and Christian belief. The different levels of political commitment and social criticism, which appear in many of these films, are also discussed. The book includes case studies of eight representative films:• The Cabinet of Dr Caligari (Wiene, 1920)• Earth (Dovzhenko, 1930)• A Man Escaped (Bresson, 1956)• Hiroshima mon amour (Resnais, 1959)• Aguirre, Wrath of God (Herzog, 1972)• Comrades (Douglas, 1986)• Le Quattro Volte (Frammartino, 2010)• Silence (Collins, 2012).

The story of black emancipation is one of the most dramatic themes of American history, covering racism, murder, poverty and extreme heroism. Figures such as Malcolm X and Martin Luther King are the demigods of the freedom movements, both film and household figures. This major text explores the African-American experience of the twentieth century with particular reference to six outstanding race leaders. Their philosophies and strategies for racial advancement are compared and set against the historical framework and constraints within which they functioned. The book also examines the 'grass roots' of black protest movements in America, paying particular attention to the major civil rights organizations as well as black separatist groups such as the Nation of Islam.
As the 2016 election campaign attests, the Grand Old Party—once moderate and even magnanimous—has fallen into a prison of its own making when it comes to presidential politics. After the debacle of the George W. Bush presidency and the rout of the Romney candidacy, Republicans said they must broaden their base, become more inclusive, and return to the warmth of Reagan idealism. Instead, what we have is a bitter, backbiting, and race- and gender-baiting campaign with a candidate more exclusive than any before him. How did we get here and how do we get out? This book tracks the modern history of the Republican Party and shows its decline, even while shining a light on its high points and urging it back in a positive direction. Every reader interested in the US presidential election, the primary process, and the clash of politics and culture will find something enlightening in John White’s exposition. Above all, he puts the Age of Trump into perspective, looking back as well as forward in his analysis. Who is this book for? Students of American government, political parties, campaigns & elections Scholars in political science and political history General readers interested in the current presidential campaign and the health of American democracyFeatures1. Current. Anticipates the current state of the Republican Party, at odds with itself as much as with the American public. Includes 2014 midterm election data with an eye toward the 2016 presidential contest.2. A broad historical sweep. Covers a broad historical period from the 1950s (Eisenhower era) to the present, with a strong emphasis on the Reagan years which represent the GOP at its zenith.3. Efficient use of polling and demographic data. Takes a broad swath of historical data (including polling data) and presents it in a condensed, readable format. At the same time, the reader is not inundated by polling and demographic data.4. Bold. Any reader will come away from this book understanding that the GOP predicament is likely to last for some time to come. The problems Republicans face are both intellectual and political. They are not likely to be solved by any one candidate or election and will be compounded and confounded by the events of 2016.

A Practical Guide to Chicken Illnesses & Diseases

This short guide contains information about the most common chicken diseases & illnesses from the author's website www. ChickenCoopGuides.com. ChickenCoopGuides.com is one of the most popular sites on the Internet for anything chicken related because of its practical, easy-to-follow advice and chicken coop plans. Since we're city people we can't have chickens where we live. We're 'part-timers' at my mother-in-law's farm out in the country every weekend. That's why I'm so glad I had the chance to preview this book on chicken illnesses and diseases. I don't feel like I'm there often enough to be an expert and this makes me feel like one. I've got a 24 hour live chicken cam that we watch sometimes (dreaming of our retirement where we can see them every day) and we've been able to use that to get to know the chickens better. Earlier this week I was able to spot a hen acting funny and based on this I suspected it was a cold and it was. My mother-in-law has been giving her garlic and greens and things all week and I think that chicken is going to be OK. I also love the reading recommendations included at the end. This guide is a jumping point to becoming an expert and it gives you all the tools you need to do just that. Thanks again, John Bob Newcastle - Astoria, NY
