Decision Theory with a Human Face

Decision Theory with a Human Face

Richard Bradley

Cambridge University Press

pokkari
When making decisions, people naturally face uncertainty about the potential consequences of their actions due in part to limits in their capacity to represent, evaluate or deliberate. Nonetheless, they aim to make the best decisions possible. In Decision Theory with a Human Face, Richard Bradley develops new theories of agency and rational decision-making, offering guidance on how 'real' agents who are aware of their bounds should represent the uncertainty they face, how they should revise their opinions as a result of experience and how they should make decisions when lacking full awareness of, or precise opinions on relevant contingencies. He engages with the strengths and flaws of Bayesian reasoning, and presents clear and comprehensive explorations of key issues in decision theory, from belief and desire to semantics and learning. His book draws on philosophy, economics, decision science and psychology, and will appeal to readers in all of these disciplines.

Chesterfield is famous worldwide for the crooked spire of the medieval Church of St Mary and All Saints, which is visible for miles around and has become a symbol of the town, but there is much more to explore in this historic Derbyshire town. Chesterfield received its charter as a market town in 1204 and a large open-air market is still held in the cobbled marketplace around the Victorian Market Hall. Its medieval street plan is still evident in the centre of the town around the narrow streets, known as the Shambles. The town’s wealth is also displayed in its elegant Georgian shopfronts. The Industrial Revolution gave a significant boost to the town’s fortunes and although little can be seen today of the rich coalfields surrounding the town, several Miners’ Welfare Clubs and housing built for the coal mining community remain. Although the more extreme plans for rebuilding the town in the 1960s were resisted, modern architecture is represented in the shape of the courthouse and several unusual churches. Chesterfield in 50 Buildings explores the history of this fascinating Derbyshire town through a selection of its most interesting buildings and structures, showing the changes that have taken place over the years. The book will appeal to all those who live in Chesterfield or who have an interest in the town.
The Prehistory of Britain and Ireland

The Prehistory of Britain and Ireland

pokkari
Sited at the furthest limits of the Neolithic revolution and standing at the confluence of the two great sea routes of prehistory, Britain and Ireland are distinct from continental Europe for much of the prehistoric sequence. In this landmark study, Richard Bradley offers an interpretation of the unique archaeological record of these islands. Highlighting the achievements of its inhabitants, Bradley surveys the entire archaeological sequence over a 5,000 year period, from the last hunter-gatherers and the adoption of agriculture in the Neolithic period, to the discovery of Britain and Ireland by travellers from the Mediterranean during the later pre-Roman Iron Age. His study places special emphasis on landscapes, settlements, monuments, and ritual practices. This edition has been thoroughly revised and updated. The text takes account of recent developments in archaeological science, such as isotopic analyses of human and animal bone, recovery of ancient DNA, and more subtle and precise methods of radiocarbon dating.

Secret Matlock & Matlock Bath

The town of Matlock is situated on the River Derwent in the heart of Derbyshire. The river here has carved a course through the limestone to create the spectacular Matlock Dale, which today lies on the edge of the Peak District. Matlock Bridge stands at a crossing point on the river and has been an important stage on routes to larger settlements such as Derby, Nottingham, Sheffield and Manchester. It was the development of the town as a spa, following the discovery of thermal springs, and the arrival of the railways that led to the town’s major expansion and the development of Matlock Bath, with numerous hydros adjoining Matlock town. The legacy of this nineteenth-century growth and prosperity can be seen in the numerous imposing Victorian buildings around the town. Many of these have since been converted from their previous use and the town attracts many visitors as a base from which to explore the Peak District. Secret Matlock & Matlock Bath explores the lesser-known episodes and characters in the history of this Derbyshire town through the ages, bringing to life tales of those who have lived here and the places they inhabited.

The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. Medical theory and practice of the 1700s developed rapidly, as is evidenced by the extensive collection, which includes descriptions of diseases, their conditions, and treatments. Books on science and technology, agriculture, military technology, natural philosophy, even cookbooks, are all contained here.++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title.
