Riddles of the Soul is the first complete English edition of one of the major books by Rudolf Steiner, Von Seelenr tseln. Dr. Steiner said of the first essay that it is written not with a pen, but with "soul-spades that want to rip away the planks that board up the world, i.e., that want to clear away the limits to knowledge set by natural science, but want to do so with inner work of the soul." In the second essay Steiner does battle with Max Dessoir, a typical foe of the spirit. He describes for the first time how the three soul-forces (thinking, feeling, and willing) relate to the three systems of the body (nerve-sense, rhythmic, and metabolic-limb). This unique work is an exploration of inner and outer frontiers and how bridges between them are built.

‘In the case of a solar eclipse, the evil that has spread over the earth can be carried out into the cosmos to wreak more havoc there, whereas in the case of a lunar eclipse, people who absolutely want to be possessed by evil thoughts can receive them from the cosmos.’In the first full translation of this lecture course, Rudolf Steiner implores his audience to recognize the connections between the material and spiritual worlds. Eclipses of the sun and moon, for example, are ‘forces at work in the universe, just like those we study today in the clinic or in the chemistry or physics laboratory’. Even everyday thinking can have a strong impact on the outer world. Materialistic thought, he says, can quite literally atomize our surroundings: ‘if all human beings start to think that everything has to be explained in terms of atoms… then the earth will actually turn into atoms… these false ideas create false realities…’Steiner speaks of the ‘world of will’ as being three-dimensional, the ‘world of feeling’ as two-dimensional, and the ‘world of thinking’ as one-dimensional. The ego itself is dimensionless, and only inner, living thinking can grasp the spiritual-mental. He discusses key cultural figures such as Friedrich Nietzsche, Herman Grimm and Julian the Apostate, and introduces multiple additional topics, including the effect of planetary forces on humans; the healing impacts of metals and other substances; the revitalization of thinking through meditation and concentration; the effects of the separation of science, art and religion; and the necessary transition from philosophy to anthroposophy.

In the Spring of 1920 Rudolf Steiner gave three lectures highly critical of the Roman Catholic Church's political history. The lectures were meant for members of the Anthroposophical Society only, but were soon leaked beyond the Society, resulting in some very bad feelings and even violence in the heavily Catholic Swiss district where Dornach is located. The lectures were transcribed from stenographic notes into German, and are included in a series of seventeen lectures entitled: Heilfaktoren f r den Sozialen Organismus (Means for Healing the Social Organism). This book contains English and Spanish translations of these three lectures. This is a complete vocabulary of the German words found in Rudolf Steiner's Seelenkalender. It is designed for the English-speaking reader with limited-or even no-knowledge of the German language. It provides a Glossary of every German word found in the verses. The Seelenkalender comprises 52 meditative verses, one for each week, intended to cultivate unity of the human soul with the life rhythms expressed in the seasons. Armed with a knowledge of the actual vocabulary, the reader can deepen their understanding of the verses, and see across and through the various English literary translations. This engagement can lead to a more direct appreciation of the nuanced meanings of the original. The vocabulary is presented alongside of the verse, with the English definitions of each newly introduced word in a given verse printed on the page facing the text. An English language verse translation by Ernst Lehrs, a personal student of Rudolf Steiner, is provided alongside the original. An alphabetic Glossary is also included. Also provided is a concise summary of some of the basic elements of the German language in order to further orient the reader in their study.
