"Totem and Taboo" is a collection of four essays by Sigmund Freud that were published together in German in 1913. Freud sought to apply his theories of psychoanalysis to the study of anthropology and early human history. The four essays cover a wide range of topics. In "The Horror of Incest", Freud examines the varied and common rules in primitive cultures that limit contact between members of the same family. In "Taboo and Emotional Ambivalence," Freud posits that primitive cultures and their attitudes about magical objects are similar to the behavior of people with neurotic psychological conditions in the modern world. In "Animism, Magic and the Omnipotence of Thought," Freud draws comparisons between the primitive belief in magic and magical animals to obsessive and compulsive disorders. Finally, in "The Return of Totemism in Childhood," Freud, influenced by one of Charles Darwin's theories about the male-dominated arrangement of early human societies, looks for parallels with his own Oedipus complex theory in the structure of primitive cultures. A classic and influential work of early psychoanalysis, "Totem and Taboo" is an important read for students of both psychology and social anthropology.

Illustrated with beautiful chapter headings that match the book cover Though it has now fallen out of favor among many practitioners and scholars, Freud's concept of psychoanalysis -- an approach that focuses primarily on adverse events in early childhood and irrational drives that are overcome via extended talk therapy -- was and continues to be enormously influential, not only in the realm of psychology, but also in the larger culture. This volume offers a comprehensive overview of psychoanalysis from the point of view of the field's creator. As part of our mission to publish great works of literary fiction and nonfiction, Sheba Blake Publishing Corp. is extremely dedicated to bringing to the forefront the amazing works of long dead and truly talented authors.

From the founder of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud, comes this fascinating introduction to his theories of narcissism. First published in 1914, On Narcissism introduces Sigmund Freud's work surrounding the psychological symptoms and treatment of narcissism. In this work, Freud explores his theories and argues narcissism's relevance to sexual development. What is now known as Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) is a mental condition that often affects one's ability to empathise and maintain healthy, balanced relationships. This compact volume is one of Freud's earliest works and contains a wealth of influential information. Examining Carl Jung's theory of non-sexual 'libido' and Alfred Adler's 'masculine protest' concept, Freud offers narcissism as an alternative explanation. Republished by Read & Co. Great Essays, On Narcissism: An Introduction is not to be missed by those interested in books on psychoanalysis or collectors of Sigmund Freud's work.
