THE GUARDIAN
Ju mer Ernaux dyker ner i historien desto mer begriper hon vilket spänningsfält föräldrarna levde i.

A revelatory meditation on class and consumer culture, from 2022 Nobel laureate Annie Ernaux A New Yorker Best of the Week Pick • A World Literature Today Notable Translation of 2023 “Translated from the French with great intelligence and sensitivity by Alison Strayer. . . . Ernaux’s diary is a provocation: to accept these life scenes as worthy of our time and attention.”—Kate Briggs, Washington Post “A dryly charming look at the way the French live now, through the sharp eyes of its most acclaimed chronicler.”—Kirkus Reviews For half a century, the French writer Annie Ernaux has transgressed the boundaries of what stories are considered worth telling, what subjects worth exploring. In this probing meditation, Ernaux turns her attention to the phenomenon of the big-box superstore, a ubiquitous feature of modern life that has received scant attention in literature. Recording her visits to a store near Paris for over a year, she captures the world that exists within its massive walls. Through Ernaux’s eyes, the superstore emerges as “a great human meeting place, a spectacle”—a flashy, technologically advanced incarnation of the ancient marketplace where capitalism, cultural production, and class converge, dictating our rhythms of desire. With her relentless powers of observation, Ernaux takes the measure of a place we thought we knew, calling us to question the experiences we overlook and to gaze more deeply into ordinary life.

In her spare, stark style, Annie Ernaux documents the desires and indignities of a human heart ensnared in an all-consuming passion. Blurring the line between fact and fiction, she attempts to plot the emotional and physical course of her two-year relationship with a married man where every word, event, and person either provides a connection with her beloved or is subject to her cold indifference. With courage and exactitude, Ernaux seeks the truth behind an existence lived, for a time, entirely for someone else.
ENGLISH DESCRIPTION WINNER OF THE 2022 NOBEL PRIZE IN LITERATURE When we stray from the marked path, the distances with those around us sometimes become insurmountable. In April 1967, the author and protagonist, then a young aspiring high school teacher, passes the qualification exam at a lyc e in Lyon, to the pride (and resentment) of her father, a former worker who, coming from a rural background and after working hard, has ended up becoming the owner of a small business in the provinces. For him, this means another step forward in his difficult social ascent; however, this satisfaction is short-lived, as he dies two months later. Father and daughter have crossed their respective "places" within society. But they have looked at each other with suspicion, and the distance between them has become increasingly painful. Here, Annie Ernaux delves not only into the complexes and prejudices, the customs and behavioral norms of a social segment with blurred boundaries, whose mirror is the cultured and educated urban bourgeoisie, but also into the difficulty of inhabiting one's own space within society.

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION WINNER OF THE 2022 NOBEL PRIZE IN LITERATUREA family scene, and its disturbing consequences, dissected by the author who has made her life into literary materialIn 1952, when Annie Ernaux was twelve years old, her father tried to kill her mother one Sunday in June, early in the afternoon. Years later, that scene appears to the author as cruelly clear as the day she lived it. Like in so many other families, her parents, who hate each other, instead adore the child, so as the days pass and forgetfulness invades the home, the memory of that Sunday seems to become a bad dream. However, that scene changed the author forever: that girl and her family "had ceased to be decent people," and everything had become shameful. Annie Ernaux examines everything from the codes of conduct and social norms that prevailed in her environment to the news of the time, the most commonly used expressions, or the fear that big cities instilled, to accurately gauge to what extent what happened made her feel unworthy.

In 1963, Annie Ernaux, 23 and unattached, realizes she is pregnant. Shame arises in her like a plague: understanding that her pregnancy will mark her and her family as social failures, she knows she cannot keep that child. This is the story, written forty years later, of a trauma Ernaux never overcame. In a France where abortion was illegal, she attempted, in vain, to self-administer the abortion with a knitting needle. Fearful and desperate, she finally located an abortionist, and ends up in a hospital emergency ward where she nearly dies. In Happening, Ernaux sifts through her memories and her journal entries dating from those days. Clearly, cleanly, she gleans the meanings of her experience.

Annie Ernaux’s father died exactly two months after she passed her exams for a teaching certificate. Barely educated and valued since childhood strictly for his labour, Ernaux’s father had grown into a hard, practical man who showed his family little affection. Narrating his slow ascent towards material comfort, Ernaux’s cold observation in A Man’s Place reveals the shame that haunted her father throughout his life. She scrutinizes the importance he attributed to manners and language that came so unnaturally to him as he struggled to provide for his family with a grocery store and cafe in rural France. Over the course of the book, Ernaux grows up to become the uncompromising observer now familiar to the world, while her father matures into old age with a staid appreciation for life as it is and for a daughter he cautiously, even reluctantly admires.
