Father Brown is back in The Wisdom of Father Brown (1914), the second of five collections of short stories featuring G. K. Chesterton's unlikely, lovable priest-detective. Included are "The Paradise of Thieves" and "The Purple Wig," which frequently rank among Chesterton's top ten tales. Along with his sidekick, reformed criminal M. Hercule Flambeau, Father Brown employs his legendary intuition and insight into the criminal mind to unerringly solve even the most baffling of mysteries-among them the perplexing case of a man who was shot without firearms and the eerie tale of the Spaniard's curse. Chesterton's wildly popular Father Brown stories-which he continued to write until his death in 1936-are among the most beloved of the detective fiction genre. This Warbler Classics edition includes a detailed biographical timeline.
The Innocence of Father Brown (Warbler Classics)
Quirky, affable, Father Brown made his first appearance in the short story "The Blue Cross" in 1910. The Innocence of Father Brown (1911) collects this story and eleven others in what is the first of five Father Brown volumes. Chesterton describes his unlikely crack detective as a short, stumpy Roman Catholic priest, with shapeless clothes, a large umbrella, and an uncanny insight into the criminal mind. Characteristically humble and usually rather quiet, except to say something profound, Father Brown relies more on intuition than deduction to solve mysteries, often assisted by the reformed criminal M. Hercule Flambeau. Chesterton's wildly popular Father Brown stories-which he continued to write until his death in 1936-are among the most beloved of the detective fiction genre.

When the government cracks down on alcohol sales, two men decide to leave their small fishing village to avoid the law and find new opportunities. The Flying Inn is an irreverent satire that delivers a unique commentary on power and politics. Humphrey Pump, also known as “Hump,” is a bar owner whose business is undercut by strict alcohol regulations. Adult beverages can only be sold when a pub sign in present. But instead of adhering to the rules, he hits the road with a sign and barrel of rum in tow. Pump is joined by Patrick Dalroy, an entertaining companion, who is just as committed to his wandering way of life. Despite their attempts to escape police, the rogue partners are eventually roped into a much larger plot. The Flying Inn is a daring piece of speculative fiction that uses satire to balance its more serious elements. Published in 1914, the story is greatly influence by the social and political concepts of its day. This gives readers insight into the many fears surrounding early twentieth century government. The Everlasting Man, written by Gilbert Keith Chesterton in 1925, is on the surface a response to H. G. Wells's The Outline of History, in which Wells ultimately argues for the theory of evolution over creationism. On closer review, rather than finding a typical discussion of faith and the mysteries of God as a response to the theory of evolution, readers will find Chesterton's own objective and passionate recount of human history and our evolution into the beings we are today, as well as the history and evolution of Jesus Christ and the Christian church. Chesterton challenges readers, both Christian and non-Christian alike, to take a step back and objectively consider not only the concepts of evolution tackled in other works by authors like H. G. Wells and Charles Darwin, but to also give Christian recounts of creationism the same objective consideration. In his approach, readers will see that the Christian view of origin is just as scientific and logical as the various secular viewpoints. Unlike most Christian works on evolution and creationism, he does not argue against the idea of evolution. Instead, Chesterton asks readers to consider that humans have always possessed more advanced skills in communication and reasoning than other animals. He also tackles the secular discussions of Christ as simply a historical figure, rather than the son of God. He reminds us that while Christ was human, his good works and teachings made him a more evolved human than those around him, and a figure who was ultimately born to die and be resurrected to help humans find the path to forgiveness for their sins. Chesterton's The Everlasting Man offers readers a great partner to H. G. Wells's The Outline of History in their journey to make an informed decision on their understanding and beliefs about the origin of humans and the existence of God and his son, Jesus Christ.

Tremendous Trifles

Tremendous Trifles is comprised of 39 chapters, each functioning as their own essay or story. With whimsical, light-hearted prose, vivid figurative language, and unparalleled insight, Chesterton covers a variety of philosophical principles of everyday life. Chesterton often used ordinary events and objects to explain deeper matters. Using relatable and accessible examples, Tremendous Trifles also test biases and preconceived ideas, specifically in the cases of fairy tales and folk lore. Stories of these genres are passed down from generation to generation, changed each time they are told, yet usually framed more optimistically than the original tale. Chesterton encourages readers to question this, and examine the implications the example may have on the other stories they hear. Accompanying the suggestion to recognize bias, the importance of one’s point of view is also examined. In Tremendous Trifles, Chesterton uses a metaphor to explain perspective. There are only two ways to see the world—either as a giant, or as a nymph. One sees all the wonders of the world as a speck of dust, the other is in awe of a single blade of grass. While advocating for seeing the beauty in simple, everyday encounters, Tremendous Trifles raises thought-provoking questions and advises that sometimes a better life is just a change of perspective away. Containing both essays of importance and intrigue and stories of silly nature, Tremendous Trifles is the perfect combination of excitement and understanding. Written in a conversational and intimate format, Tremendous Trifles by G. K Chesterton is a collection of essays and stories that features philosophical theories of happiness, perspective, and narratives. Described as thought-provoking and humorous, Tremendous Trifles educates without the use intimidating or exclusive advice. While celebrating simplicity and encouraging people to find joy in the mundane, Tremendous Trifles uncovers truths about humankind that have remained relevant to modern audiences. This edition of Tremendous Trifles by G. K Chesterton is now presented in an easy-to-read font and features a striking new cover design. With these accommodations, Tremendous Trifles is restored to modern standards while preserving its original ingenuity.
